Is a HSG really necessary?

I would recommend getting one. I decided against getting one when my dr suggested it at first , then after 2 fault attempts I had it done and got pregnant right after. I think it clears things out :)

I am in the exact same boat. Almost 39 and it looks like the MD will require an HSG. Even though I have also never attempted to get pregnant it's probably good to make sure all is clear before putting the time, money and effort into iui. Not looking forward to the test though.... ugh

I would also recommend. After 6 months of treatment I got one and much to my surprise I had a 100% tube blockage. My tube actually was opened during the test. The following month after treatment I got pregnant. It's worth knowing before you start treatment.

I had it done. Hurts like my worst menstrual cramps, but I got bfp on first try with iui and meds. What was even better is that my insurance covered it even though I don't have infertility coverage.

I'd recommend doing the test, to make sure everything is in working order. I'm worried bout the pain. But My Doc. is prescribing valium along with 4 tabs. of antibiotics to take an hour before, as well as IB profin. I'm glad all I have to worry about are co-pays. Surprising for me that my coverage at Kaiser is this good. No complaints, and the staff are more that helpful.

I also had the test, however it was done while I had surgery to remove a cyst and I also had a blockage. Had my first IUI Thursday, currently in the Tww.

I keep hearing about people being prescribed drugs for the HSG, but my doc didn't offer me anything. In fact, he didn't even tell me it would hurt until I had my pants off! I didn't need any meds and went back to work after. There was only a few seconds where the pain was so intense I thought I would pass out. But then it magically let up and I could breath again. When it was time to get dressed the nurse kept asking if I was ok. Apparently they have a lot of women faint when they stand up.

I had an HSG done 2 months ago, and it's really not that bad. They gave me antibiotics to take before and after the procedure. I was very nervous so the only part that was somewhat painful was the speculum, I didn't feel the catheter or the injection of the dye at all. They had twisted the screen so I could see what was happening and got the results right away, they are open and everything is fine. My doctor had recommended to have it done before starting the whole process because if I have any failed IUIs, they will end up doing the test anyway, so in the end it's reassuring and can save time down the line. I had to be accompanied to have the test done, but just ended up driving my sister-in-law back home and just going to work. The only thing that I had no idea about is the room where the exam takes place, I was expecting a regular OBgYn office but where I had it done was like an operating room with all the tools sealed and opened up on a cloth covered table and such... So that just made me a little more stressed, but the test itself was fine. So have it done if needed, it gave me great peace of mind to know everything is functional.

I never did for either pregnancy. First took on second try, currently preggo via first try.

It is a good idea to have it done. My doctor ordered it before having IUI. HSG revealed that i have absolutely no blockage and everything looked fine. In my experience the procedure didnt hurt at all, but maybe that's because i took hydrocodone prescribed for this purpose. The doctor said that another benefit of HSG is therapeutic because it helps clear the tubes and makes it easier to get pregnant.
