IUI after IVF Age 44

Here's the situation: At age 38, we did a retrieval from my wife. We got two 5 day embryos and transferred one fresh to me and froze the second. Happy baby boy arrived 9 months later!!! 18 months later, we transferred the second to me and got a chemical pregnancy. We did two more retrieval cycles with my wife: 8 five day embryos and 4 five day embryos (she was 40 and 41) and we did PGD, all abnormal. We did one retrieval cycle from me at age 43 resulting in one five day embryo; PGD = NORMAL!. We just went through the transfer cycle to my wife and got our BFN. We feel so devastated and can't financially do another retrieval or donor cycle. We have two vials of sperm left and are considering IUI to me (the wife, though younger, has lots of health issues - previous DCIS, thyroid, immune issues, etc). At 44, I know the odds are so stacked against us. Does anyone have any advice about protocol, fertility boosters, etc. I have been on Vitamin D, CoQ10, Acai Extract, Prenatals, Omega-3s, and Evening Primrose Oil for 9 months now. I know life will be wonderful with our son, we don't have much close family and I really wanted him to have a sibling. Also, I don't know when to quit.

    Hi ruby,

My story is long, but I'll try to make it short. My husband and I conceived our son with donor sperm, IUI worked first try, non-medicated. Our son is two and a half now, and we have been trying again since July 2015. We did one unmedicated cycle in July, one medicated in September, and then ran out of vials from the donor we chose. My husband wasn't open to switching donors, since he has a daughter from a previous marriage with the donor we used to conceive our son. That said, there were IVF vials left, so we went that route.

I was put on a standard protocol as follows:

    1. Birth control for three weeks, last active pill on 1/29.
    2. 1/25 - Started Lupron (10u) - continued Lupron dosage nightly until 2/5...
    3. 2/3 - Bloodwork and ultrasound in the AM - everything looked good (ovaries were suppressed as they wanted)
    3. 2/5 - Lupron lowered to 5u, Started Gonal-f (300GF)
    4. Continued Gonal-f dosage nightly, and Lupron nightly (still at 5u)
    5. 2/8 - Bloodwork (all looked great)
    6. 2/11 - Bloodwork and Ultrasound - This was a complete shock... everything looked great on paper, but the doctor was in utter shock when he could only see 2 mature ovaries. The nurse even started crying. I couldn't really see what was going on on the screen, but I knew by their reactions that it didn't look good.

My cycle was cancelled. It appears that they over suppressed my ovaries. The doctor told me that I am young (33) and healthy (semi-true, I do have Crohn's Disease, but I am in remission).... and that I should be able to give him more mature eggs... they wanted to see at least 8-9 follicles.

After weeks of waiting for my period to come (it took longer because of the meds), I fell into a depression, wondering where we were headed... $3,000 for medications down the drain.

By some miracle, somebody sold back a good number of vials to Fairfax. So, we decided to do an IUI cycle last month. I thought that with 3 mature follicles on Femara and some really crazy early symptoms, this was it... I just knew I was going to get pregnant. Unfortunately, I was wrong... I was completely shocked.

I am currently in TWW... another IUI cycle... I have been taking 600mg of COQ-10 per day, since my IVF cycle was cancelled. I also take prenatal vitamins daily, along with separate vitamins (due to my Crohn's Disease).

I hope this helps... I wish you all of the luck in the world. They say "at least you have one", but I am hoping to give my son a closer sibling as well. Keep me posted <3
