Trying to decide between donors

ToomomsToomoms Junior Member Junior Member
I have a couple donors in mind from Fairfax and some from other sperm banks too. Are we allowed to talk about donors from other banks, or is there another forum where we can talk about multiple donor banks and their donors at once? I know Xytex has a forum, but it's restricted and only for families who have already reported a birth. Also, what is everyone's opinion on adult pictures? I seem to be unable to make the leap on a donor if he does not have an adult photo. I have found that baby pictures compared to the end result of adult men seems to be drastically different. Features change so much from childhood to adulthood. I've found that some of the adult pictures where the team here describes the donor as "handsome" and "good looking" are not my standard of handsome lol. It's been tough to find the whole package of intelligent, healthy genetically/family, good-looking, and produced healthy babies so far, but I think I've narrowed down a few good candidates.

-30, First try, Good fertility eval so far, Going to try at-home insemination with my wife - any tips or pointers are appreciated, but i'm ultimately under care of doctor

Yes! Yes! I was dead set against seeing the adult picture at first. I was worried that I'd see the donor every time I looked at my child. But after my wife convinced me to look at a couple baby vs adult pictures.....no more discussion was needed. The most gorgeous babies didn't even resemble the adults in a lot of cases. So yup, we decided not to choose a donor who didn't provide an adult photo. ;)

I agree with both of you! My wife and I are in the "search for a donor" phase and there is a MAJOR difference between some of the baby verses adult photos. We are having a hard time without the adult photo. Some have really cute baby pics and then you go to the adult and it is like a different human being. I felt a bit shallow for wanting ALL of the info/pics possible but then again I think it is fair right?! We are potentially making a baby with this person...Do either of you have children already? We are looking at 4940 currently...we have a consult scheduled for February 21st to meet with the fertility specialist. We are currently in Houston and are both super excited and nervous! It is nice to have this forum though....seems like we are all going through the same emotions etc...

I'm in Houston too! I am using 4940...single mom by choice. I am 39 but have no fertility issues. I had 2 unsuccessful IUIs in the fall and moved to IVF and just had my FET of a 6-day blast that had pgs testing and is perfect Now just finishing out the bedrest and all the waiting!! What fertility practice are you going to consult with A&D? I am with HFI---Woodlands. Dr. Steward is amazeballs

Get out of town!!!! I'm in Houston too!!!!! Small world. So there's three of us in Houston on this thread? And thank goodness there are more of us set on seeing the adult picture. Makes me feel better. I feel shallow to a degree, but at the same time, I want to give my future children every advantage. So any self criticism of being "shallow" falls away in light of that thought. I always wanted to see the adult picture, but my wife was picking based on the whole package + cuteness of the baby photo. I had to show her some of the adult pictures to get her to change her mind. And it was night and day once she started seeing adult pictures. So, it has definitely narrowed our choices down to only choose donors with adult photos. We are choosing between donors here at Fairfax and Xytex only because these are the only two banks that provide adult photos as far as I see. By the way, 4940 is also on our short list, and no I do not have any children yet. We will be wanting multiple children with the same donor so we are buying many vials at once (9 or 10).

I'm also in Houston, and if this is too personal, please feel free not to answer. But how expensive has your IVF journey been with HFI Woodlands? I have a current fertility doctor for baby #1, assuming all goes well I'll stay with him, (for fertility eval, ovulation monitoring, and potential IUI if at home insemination does not work), but I'm looking ahead at possibly doing reciprocal IVF, so I can carry my wife's baby on baby #2.

If anyone wants to talk to me about other donors from Xytex, use the messaging feature to send me a direct message so we can talk (click on my user name which will take you to my profile, from there you can send me a message). I'm not sure if it's against forum rules to talk about Xytex Donors here.

    Hi Aggienurse!

So exciting that you are local and I am assuming it is safe to say that you are a nurse like me as well! :) We live really close to the medical center and I work at Texas Children's so we are using the Family Fertility Center at the Pavilion for Women. We finally had our consult this week and our REI is Dr. William Gibbons. I have another friend who lives out in Spring who also used Dr. Steward and had wonderful things to say about the experience. I am still learning all of the lingo for this process and it is so stressful! I look forward to hearing about your updates! Sending lots of positive energy your way!

Wow! Seems like there are a lot of moms in Houston! That is exciting!
  • A&DHarterA&DHarter Member Member
It is a small world right?! I kind of find it comforting to a degree to see that there are several local moms to be in Houston. My wife and I are still learning all of the language and about the process of all of it. We just had our first appt on Tuesday and I had the HSG yesterday. Our follow up appt isn't until March 21st. It is also nice to see we aren't the only ones who are shallow enough to admit that an adult picture is a must! :) If you guys are open to it, we are open to exchanging contact info because having support from people who understand the process would be great!

so I am new at this, what is the process for all of this? Like you choose a donor then what? Can you do it at home on your own? Or you must have a gyn doctor?
