IUI Timing?

Hi all! I'm approaching my first IUI and have some questions about the timing. The first day of my cycle was 10/31. I start Clomid 11/4 for 5 days and have an ultrasound to check follicles on 11/13. Does this seem kind of late? I will have finished the clomid 11/9 and figured the ultrasound would be closer to that. If all is good on 11/13, then my IUI should be scheduled for 11/15 (tentatively). I'll also do the ovidrel injection for that too. Does this time frame seem right to all of you? Thanks in advance!!

Something I've learned about the process is to make sure your communicating with your doctor and/or nurses. To clear up any questions you might have. Remember, no question is stupid. Secondly, it seems there's a lot of factors that dictates the timing of your procedure. I think the length of your menstruation is a key factor. If you tend to bleed for a significant number of days, that would delay the start of your ovulation. On average I menstruate 6 days. Based on that my IUI procedure seems to be around the 13th day, with day 1 of my period being day 1 of my IUI cycle. Another factor is the size of your follicle(s) determined at your second US. Based on its size you might be able to do your IUI sooner or several days after the US. That being said, the length of the IUI cycle may vary from month to month. A menstrual cycle can vary from 24 to 35 days.

If you don't already, you might consider downloading a menstrual cycle app to your phone. Based on past data, it will plot out when and how long you are expected to bleed and when you're expected to ovulate. you might be pleasantly surprised to find your future IUI cycle is matched well to when your body is expected to ovulate. This way you can visually follow along with the process or if your IUI procedure day seems to be out of alignment with your actual ovulation, it might be a good conversation to have with your Doctor.

Good luck on your upcoming procedure.

Hi Rmd0591. The day of your first ultrasound is largely dependent on the average length of your cycle. If you have a standard 28-day cycle, then it can be assumed that your normally ovulate between day 14-16 because the second half of your cycle, the period after ovulation, is typically be 12-14 days. Therefore, if you are doing a trigger shot then they will bring you in prior to Day 12/13 when your LH (Lutenizing Hormone) would typically began to surge and naturally lead to ovulation. In my personal opinion, 11/13 (Day 14) would be late if you have a typical 28 day cycle; however, if your cycles are longer then it likely makes sense. How long are your cycles?

Hi! Thank you! My cycles are normally about 28 days, periods about 5-6 days. I have been using the Ovia app on my phone which is showing my fertile window as being nov 8-13. Because this is my first round, I wasn't sure if the fertility drugs affected those dates differently. It just seems later than I had expected, considering this would put the IUI itself Nov 14-15.

Hello Rmd0591, i think your meds and all are late if you start your period on 10/31. Based on my experience, i started clomid on day 3 - in your case you should've started on 11/2. I did injections too which started on day 5 - in your case, that is 11/4. Also, the ultrasound start as early as day 3 (which is the time you start taking clomid to see what you have at the start of treatment) then day 8 (which is after you finished your clomid to see how your follicles grew) then day 10 and 12 for monitoring if they are continously growing. Day 12 was the day i triggered because my dominant follicle was 20mm and day 14 was the IUI sched. Your trigger date will depend on your follicles being ready to be released cause women have different cycle days. The only way you'll see your follicle sizes is thru ultrasound. So i'm kind of worried that your ultrasound is scheduled on your day 14 which is the day usually for ovulation - that is suppose to be your iui date cause eggs only live for 12-24hrs after release. If you miss it, your whole treatment goes to waste and you'll have to try the next month.

I'm letting you know how my IUI went as i got pregnant on my first try so i know that schedule works. Goodluck to you!

So, how my Fertility clinic works, once your period starts, you must show up for the 1st ultrasound on day 2, 3 or 4. Whichever day you go, is day 1 of Letrozole (which is similar to Clomid) and it's taken for 5 days. I eventually go for my second ultrasound (to measure follicles) 7 days after the first US (which is 3 days after my last Letrozole).

Based on this schedule, if my period would have started on 10/31 and I waited for the 4th day for my 1st ultrasound I would go in today (11/3). I would then take my first Letrozole starting today(11/3) to 11/7. On 11/10 I would go for my 2nd US and depending on my follicle, I would trigger on 11/11 or 11/12 for the IUI procedure to be had 11/13 or 11/14, depending on which day I triggered.

So, based on this schedule you may be off by one day. Remember each cycle may change the schedule slightly based on your bleed time and your follicle size, but it should be relatively similar. Perhaps they're allowing one extra day for a more mature follicle?

Like I should, you should reach out to your Doctor and ask whatever is on your mind. You're paying a lot with a goal of becoming pregnant. Its important that its done right.

That helps a lot to see it laid out like that. Thank you! Because it's my first round of all of this, it's very new to me and I'm hoping that it works on the first try. I'd at least like to make sure we're doing everything we can to give it the best chances. From what I was told, the ultrasound to check follicles would be 11/13 and then if all is where it should be, I would trigger that day for the IUI the next day, or trigger 11/14 and IUI 11/15 depending. It just seemed a little late to me. I am going to call my doctor Monday morning to ask. While they are an awesome team of doctors, I just want to make sure I'm doing all I can. Thank you so much for the input!!

Hi! I just recently had an IUI and am in my first (hopefully only!) TWW.
Your office sounds similar to mine in some ways - they do the first ultrasound on day 2 or 3 and letrozole for 5 days starting day 3. I then went for my next ulrasound day 10. I went again on day 13 and day 16 then had the IUI on day 19 (trigger on 17). My follicles weren't growing that quickly. It's definitely a complicated process and every time I go in I ask to speak with the nurses about something else. They're a great resource!
If things don't turn out from this cycle I have a lot more questions for next time after having gone thru the process. I think that I would also be able to ask better questions having a better understanding of when they would want to trigger and how my body works and potentially responds to the medicine.
I was worried that they only saw 3 follicles but apparently more than three and they are concerned about too many and possibly don't do the IUI at my practice. At day 16 US there was one quite good looking and one that would hopefully be mature at the ovulation.
