What is the lifespan of thawed sperm?

edited November 2010 in Donor Sperm FAQs
Once thawed, what is the expected lifespan of the sperm? We inseminate immediately upon thawing, of course, but want to know how long the sperm are expected to survive inside. We've researched online and have gotten very mixed answers. Our doctor is uncertain and thought our bank would know that answer best.

  • There are many factors that can effect the lifespan of sperm, hence the varied timelines. It appears that most current studies showed that on average washed sperm can live for 24+ hours outside the body and 48+ hours inside the body. Unwashed sperm lives significantly less than 24 hours (likely only 6-12 hours) outside the body but the same amount of time inside the body. Once sperm dries out it dies so small volumes can decrease this time significantly.
