Can anyone suggest ideas or ways to start preparing. My partner and I are looking to get pregnant in the near future and are researching options to start our family. Is this better for a doctor to inser the sperm or at home?

  • Good luck!

It's so exciting when you decide to start trying.

I've always done IUIs at our clinic (got pregnant with our son on 5th try in 2004, and will be going in for our 7th try for #2 sometime soon), so I can't say whether one or the other is better.

I'd recommend getting a checkup at your clinic a few months before trying just to make sure there are no major issues, monitoring your cycle so that you can see whether it's consistent or if there are changes that you need to watch out for once you officially start ttc, taking vitamins, and just doing as much as you can to relax and take care of yourself or your partner.

If you haven't already checked it out, this book was really helpful to me in those beginning stages: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guide-Pr ... 976&sr=1-4

    Good luck!
  • First off - congrats to you and your partner on trying to conceive! It's a rollercoaster of emotions from here on out :-)

As far as where to begin... I would find an OBGYN or RE (depending on what your insurance covers - RE's specialize in fertility, but are much more expensive and often are not covered by insurance). If you choose to do an ICI at home, you will need a doctors authorization for the sperm anyway, so visiting a doctor is going to have to be your first step! Once you find a doctor, they can explain their protocol. Personally, I recommend IUI at the clinic for better odds, but it's all about what you can afford to pay. ICI's at home have worked for many!

Good luck on what ever you choose!
