Trying for the 2nd time and makin some changes!
My wife and I are trying for the second time in August and are looking for as many answers to this as possible. How many hours after +OPK should we start to insem?
We plan to purchase 3-4 ICI vials and try again at home. In June we tried for the first time. We went gung ho and bought 6 vials and insem for 4 days straight about 24 hours apart late in the evening starting the day before we knew there would be a +OPK. Our OB/GYN had said to start early as not to miss it. We were not using the smileys tho and were using strips that were most likely less accurate (+ would show for 2-3 days with usually 1-2 days of that being very dark-confusing a bit...lol) this time we would like to be more specific.
We have read like crazy and talked to many people and gotten advise a hundred different ways and are just trying to take count for what people who have had BFP and BFN to see where the common denominator is time wise anyway.
Since we have read that frozen thawed sperm only lives approx 24 hrs with the first 12 being the best and the egg only lives approx 24 hrs with the first 12 being the best we're thinking that 24 hrs apart was maybe too long? Maybe we were too soon or too late? We will be using the infamous smileys this time and checking every 4 hours fo rthe positive starting about 2 days before we would normally expect the +OPK. We are just unsure of when after getting the smiley should we start insem and how many hrs apart thereafter?
Any advise at all is so greatly appreciated!
SIncerely, Thank You.

I put together a timeline today, because I am a dork. Using all the information that you stated above (and knowing that I'm doing in-office, unmedicated IUI x2 per cycle, and I pretty-much need to dictate the timing), I think that I'll be trying to insem at roughly 22 and 40 hours post +OPK (so ... 18 hours apart - my FP Doc suggested 12). I literally put together blocks of time and laid them on top of each other to see the overlap and that's what I came up with. I'm a pretty visual person, so this really helped me.
Good luck to you guys, I'll be hoping for BFP's for both of us!

Again, good luck! With juggling the clinic hours and my body's insistance on surging overnight, I ended up with the (not ideal) schedule of insem at 24 hours (or more) post +OPK, and then again at 34 hours +OPK this month. Both today.
Hope things go well for both of us this time.

I saved money and went to a doc right away. I ovulated at 33 hours and had an IUI at 36 hours. Most docs will tell you if you time the IUI/ICI right more than one vial is a waste.
I suggest doing more research before you do another round to save yourself time, money and heartache. Have you done any testing at the doc? The reason I ask is that its important to make sure your body is even ovulating. Just because you get a positive OPK doesnt mean ovulation is happening.
I thing trying at home is just wonderful. I am considering that for the next go round (my partner will be carrying our next child, but if we go for # three, I'll be up at the mound again). I can imagine it makes it much more intimate.
Here is my advice to you (if you are not already pregnant, that is!)... Use the cheapie OPK's for the few days leading up to the positive OPK. When you are unsure of the +/-, use the smiley OPK's. If you are checking every four hours, you should get pretty accurate timing. If you are using 4 vials, I would insem at 12, 18, 24, and 36 hours POST +OPK. Don't insem before the +. If you are using three vials, I would do 12, 24, and 36. If you are using two vials, I would try at 18 and 36 hours.
This is just my two-cents. I got preggo on the first try (granted we did IUI unmedicated at the clinic) using two vials and insemed at 18 and 36 hours. Every body is different, but I went with the most common time-table suggested by my doc.
Good luck to you and your wife!!!
