Good morning. I have just dropped my 7 year old niece and 13 year old daughter off at school and I am contemplative. My niece was born to my single sister 8 years ago this coming Sunday. Every single day I'm thankful that my sister had the courage to pursue single motherhood and that there was a man who, for whatever reasons, was willing to donate his sperm. My niece Nan and her mom are a match made in heaven. They have such a wonderful relationship and they spread love and laughter wherever they go. Sure, there are days when Nan will in some small way express a bit of concern about why their family is different, but for the most part she knows that she doesn't have a dad. I am so touched by the honesty and love that Nan and my sister have that I wrote a book about Nan and her donut dilemma about a year ago. Through that journey I have met more competent and capable women who simply want to have a child. It's a beautiful thing that in 2012 women have choices for pursuing parenthood. In fact, the other day my sister heard Nan's friend ask her about her dad, or lack of dad. Nan responded "I don't have a dad, I have a donor." Nan's friend was confused and Nan simply said to her, "It's a long story." The two girls went on to play without giving things another thought. If you are thinking about single parenthood and wonder if it will be too hard, too controversial, too confusing, too (fill in the blank) acknowledge your concern and then move forward with your desire to be a parent. You will never regret it. Nan is loved, so loved that I can't put words to it. My sister's life is made richer and more rewarding everyday thanks to sweet Nan.
