Medical Updates provided by CLI offer the added advantage that they are verified. We can confirm client information, review donor records and provide you accurate information right from the source. Please contact us if there is a medical update you would need to share. Donors can always update their medical history with us and we will share that information with you when it becomes available.

We have received a report of an offspring from Donor 4270 born with an isolated congenital heart defect (bicuspid aortic valve).

What are congenital heart defects (CHD)?
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are among the most common multifactorial birth defects in humans, occurring in 0.5 to 1% of all live births. CHDs usually do not occur solely due to genetic influences, but are thought to occur due to multiple factors, which include both environmental factors and genetic predisposition.

What are the chances for my child?
With a history of a CHD in an offspring of donor 4270, the risk for other half siblings to have a CHD present at birth is slightly higher than the general population risk and is believed to be about 2 to 5%. If you have a child by this donor, it is worth mentioning to your pediatrician so they can reassure you.

If a pregnancy is achieved as a result of using semen or embryos created from donor 4270, a consultation with a genetic or fetal specialist to discuss the risk for CHD is recommended. Obstetrical ultrasound and fetal echocardiography at 18-22 weeks gestation is also recommended. Ultrasound evaluations or other diagnostic tests can detect some but not all types of CHDs during pregnancy.

A common question is ‘How do we know it is coming from the donor?’
The simple answer is that we don’t know that for sure. There is no testing we can do at this time to tell us what happened exactly. There are many unknowns about why CHDs occurs. We do know that in families where one child has a CHD, another child born is at slightly greater risk than we would expect in the general population. (The general population risk is 1%). The half sibling risk is about 2 to 5%. It is because of this increased risk we are sending this notification.

If you have stored semen samples on site with your doctor’s facility or at Fairfax Cryobank you are entitled to a full refund for the cost paid per dose for a full year after the date of this notification (9/26/20). Any unused semen specimens qualify for a full refund of what was paid until 9/26/20. Incurred shipping or storage costs will not be refunded. If you have specimens stored at Fairfax Cryobank, your account will remain active until we hear from you. If the specimens are stored at your doctor’s office and you do not want to keep the specimens for future use and desire a refund, you must authorize destruction at your doctor’s facility and that facility must send us a letter indicating that they have complied with that request. Only after receiving that letter from the offsite storage facility with your name, donor #, specimen dates (on the vials) including the total number of units destroyed will the refund be generated.

CLI has a full time certified genetic counselor, Suzanne Seitz, MS, available to you to answer your questions. In addition, our staff is available to help process refunds and exchanges as necessary. Please call us at 1-800-466-2796 for more information.
