What did you do when Insurance would not cover anything?

I had a consultation with Shady Grove this week for assistance in conceving my second child as I only have two tries left with the same donor. I would really like to better my chances. Insurance will not cover anything because we have only tired three times this year and that is not enough to deem me infertile. So we are looking at over $2,300.00 for this cycle and I don't have that laying around. I hate putting in on my credit cards too because they are high enough with just buying the vials and storage and shipping......What did you do when you had to pay for everything out of pocket? This will not stop me from going through with it but I am looking at my options of how we are going to cover it. Thank you!

Our insurance does not cover anything "infertility." My RE's office codes all the blood work and ultrasounds as diagnostic so my insurance covered that stuff at 90%. We had to pay out of pocket for everything else. I have been through 8 IUI's total and had a couple other cycles that were cancelled, after monitoring, for lack of response to meds. I found the blood work and ultrasounds to be the most expensive part, after buying the samples of course, so with those mostly covered it was doable. Maybe see if they can code some stuff diagnostic? Good luck!

My insurance only covered diagnostics. I only ordered enough vials each cycle so I didn't have to pay for storage - that might be a way to cut down on expenses. We just saved up and did them - luckily for us we were able to do them on consecutive months.

Our insurance will only cover diagnostic charges. We have to pay everything else out of pocket. We are just now getting a bill paid down that accumulated over time after our insurance company denied to pay from multiple labwork and ultrasounds. What a roller coaster ride!!! Everytime we went in to the clinic, they would tell us we didn't owe anything (except for co pays and IUI fees, of which we paid on the date of service) ... then we got a bill in the mail...Surprise :x
It is tough sometimes. We have cut down our bills, taken out loans, buying more groceries on sale, using coupons, bringing lunch to work from home cooked leftovers the night before, and we have even sold cookies & brownies at work to help pay for our procedures. Really, it's all worth it if we can have a family. We will probably continue all of the above after we have children...we look at it as being financially prepared parents in training!

Luckily I was able to switch insurances. Only after dropping a few thousand into my appointments. Most employers offer an alternate for insurances, see if another is available for you even if you have to pay more for a year (which is what I did) and switch back next year (also did this).

If you are a patient at SGFC, you should be able to apply for shared help. Have you done that? I think they offer up to 70% discounts depending on your financial situation.

We are with SGFC I will have to look into their financial help. I forgot about that. Thank you for the reminder!

Our insurance was changed from an HMO to a PPO a few years ago when I was pregnant with our daughter. So, late last year we started looking into trying again but was worried about the cost. Fertilitylifelines.com has a program that helps if you have to have more than 1 treatment if using Gonal-F and Serono has a Compassionate Care Program For Infertility that helps with meds if you meet their requirements. We started that process and they found out that our mail in prescription coverage was different than our regular coverage. Through the 1-800 number for Mail in prescriptions on the back of our insurance card we found out that we only had to pay $65 co-pays with MEdCo. I'm not sure if you've checked into this, but maybe any of this will help.
