Is sperm ever "to old" to use?

bluesky10bluesky10 Senior Member Senior Member
Is there a shelf life for the sperm? A point that is become to old to use and get good results? I ask because today I had my first IUI the sperm was from 9/08. Was curious on the strength of it as it ages.

So far no limit has been officially established for how long sperm can be frozen and mantain it's efficiency. However, Fairfax Cryobank will periodically test older samples to determine post-thaw survival rates after many years. Thus far, the length of time samples have been frozen does not appear to have a significant impact on the post-thaw survival rates of the sperm. Cryogenic Laboratories, an affiliate sperm bank, has documented cases of pregnancies achieved from sperm samples that were frozen 23 years prior.
