Newbie w/ Questions-Please Help!

Hi, I am new to this site, just signed up today. I am 28 and my husband and I have wanted a baby since we first got together almost 9 years ago. We found out in June of 2009 that he does not produce any sperm. We have gone through the whole grieving process, experienced a brief seperation in our marriage, discussed our options, and decided on sperm donation...with NO idea where to start.

At one time, we were both on insurance through my job, but I no longer work for that company. (During that time, he had 2 or 3 semen analysis done and I underwent an ovulation test, which came back poitive :D ). The job I have now provides insurance for me after a "new hire probationary period," which will be over soon. I am so clueless as to what I should do first, especially if there is anything I should be doing before my insurance kicks in, such as taking care of my pre-natal body, charting my cycle, looking for a doctor, etc. I'm not even sure what my insurance will cover, nor do I understand many of the terms associated with fertility and trying to conceive.

Has anyone else done a home insemination with donor sperm and had succes? Money is a real object for us and I think this would be our least expensive option. However, I understand that the success rate is lower, and I don't know if I can mentally and emotionally handle the disappointment. I think I just really need someone to tell me what to do!

P.S. I would appreciate if any abbreviations are explained: ttc=trying to conceive

THANK YOU

Welcome! I don't have a lot of answers for you when it comes to the insurance thing because every insurance is different. Mine covered testing and monitoring, but not drugs or treatments. I did a non-medicated InterUterine Insemination (IUI) in the doctor's office. We paid out of pocket for the sperm, the IUI, and a trigger shot. That was 3 years ago and I really don't remember how much it cost and I believe less than $2000. I have very regular cycles and no fertility issues so my OBGYN suggested I do at home insemination, but my husband and I wanted the best chance so went with an IUI in an RE's office. I do know 2 people personally that have done home inseminations and they worked. One was my OB and her partner and the other was a friend and her husband. She actually got pregnant the very fist home insemination. So, it isn't unheard of!

    Good luck!

Thank you so much! I'm still not sure what we will do, but it makes me feel better to hear others' success stories!

We had the same problem as you - we worked through a fertility clinic and I'd recommend to anyone to go through a clinic. We went through 4 cycles without medicine and ended up getting pregnant on our second cycle using some medications. If you go through a bunch of cycles without a positive result, you may end up depressed so having a doctor monitor you like that and suggesting other alternatives might also be helpful.

    Good luck!

i do highly recommend you check on insurance coverage and make sure if you havent been tested that you are! i ovulated just fine also..had regular cycles but i had a slew of tests- everything came back normal i even had a test showing my tube was clear ( i only have one) than a year later at the time we didnt know my husband had 0 sperm i decided to get the laporoscopy done (surgery to check inside for endometriosis- polyps- scarring- blocked tubes) to my surprise it came back showing my tube was completely blocked! if i had not had that test done OR if my husband had been tested first we would have gone through many IUIs with no success and spent alot of money so you want to make sure all is good with you- there is way more to your body than ovulation...i had all the great fertility signs, plenty of eggwhite cervical mucus- would get + on my ovulation- all was perfect textbook but meanwhile my tube was blocked! if you have gone through all that and know you are fine than go for it- do the home semination especially if its more cost effective for you! good luck
