anyone doing IVF with donor??

hi everyone
we are in the process of starting IVF...probably wont be on injections until March!
we found out after 3 years of TTC that my husband was not producing sperm- instead of going through TESA/PESA and all that we decided we had had enough and would rather just be parents so here we are...i also have one fallopian tube and the remaining one is blocked so IVF was going to happen either way...anyone else doing IVF? if not -those who have was it successful first time around?

    Greetings! Welcome! Good Luck!

I am not currently doing IVF. My husband and I did IVF last Memorial Day 2010. It was our only biological option, as my Husband has the fertility problem.

But here is a quick introduction to my situation. I have a 10yr old Daughter from a previous situation, I am currently 30yrs old and we have been trying to concieve for over 10yrs with my Husband. After many years of grieving, gastric bypass surgery for myself (I was almost 400 pounds, down to 200 pounds currently), and still blaming myself for infertility when we knew it was my husband; we finally went to an RE. My Husband, who is currently 32yrs old, has a very low sperm count due to a Hernia in his one testical when he was a tween. He also found out that time the other testical was undergrown, and the only testical producing any sperm.

The IVF, on my part, fairly well. Started with Lupron injections, then Menopur and Braville injections, then HGC trigger shots, to Progestrone vaginal suppositories with oral Estrogen and baby Aspirin medication. Tons of ultrasound and blood work appointments flooded my calendar on my Blackberry. Had 29 Follicles sucessfully stimulated, but only 10 eggs were retrieved (was in a car accident the day before my egg retrieval, which I do not think helped any). All of the eggs fertilized beautifully, but then started dying one right after another. The Fertility Clinic rushed me back in to implant the last two viable eggs.

Unfortunately, the IVF didnt work or I would not be here. At our follow up appointment with our RE, he stated that the embrologists made lots of notations about abnormalities in the very few sperm that "looked healthy and active". We took the summer and fall 2010 off from treatments. We needed time to grieve again and think about our options and see the Ferility Center Psychologist. She thought we would be great canidates to be foster parents, as we felt adoption in the USA is very expensive. My Husband was open to donor sperm first, as he knew this would be a real possibility due to knowing his infertility. I finally came around and open to donor sperm around Thanksgiving 2010 and my Husband could not be more excited.

I do not need to to do IVF with donor sperm, as you can see, but I will be doing my first IUI this week. I go in tomorrow (day 14) for my ultra sound, blood work and HCG trigger shots tomorrow. By the way, I was on Clomid days 3-7 of my cycle. So needless to say, I am excited and scared to the bone. My IUI is scheduled for Tuesday/Wednesday, I am doing two insemination, one vial each time.

All I can pass to you, is know your insurance coverage so you do not get any surprises. I knew my benifits inside and out through my health insurance, but got a surprise that even though it is a speciality, all my fertility medications went through my prescription insurance. Needless to say, I have do not have great coverage on the medication/injections part. Also, get messages, acupuncture and some time type of meditation. Any stress relievers are a must! I wish I did more in that area. I thought I could handle the stress, as my life is pretty stressful. I was not prepared for the stress of an IVF cycle. And last but not least, do an Intermediate Family Medical Leave Act if you can. Most employers will count infertility and this protects you from any unexcused tardies or absences. I work for a huge Chicagoland Hospital/Medical System and they have strict tardy/absent policies.

Hope this helps and once again, best of luck!

hi there- so sorry it took me forever to reply- i kept checking and my post wasnt up!

i am so sorry for all you went through..that sounds VERY stressful! how are things going now? you had the IUI yet?

i have done research for the last year on everything...i checked my insurance- i actually faxed them a sheet with all meds we have to use- they came back telling me it will be all covered- we have up to $6000 for fertility meds lifetime- i also took the same list to my pharmacist to make sure they can get all the meds in....they confirmed all of it on my list as drugs they can get in...we went in to speak with the DR a few weeks ago to confirm the process and amounts and things like that so we know what we have to come up with...i do yoga/pilates and i do treadmill when i have time...i try my best to not be stressed so i have already warned all my friends and family that during that time i want NO calls about their problems lol...i find hearing others issues stresses me right out and i seem to be the one THEY call so i made that very clear...i am taking a week off work when i have an idea of date for transfer!

i hope the IUI works for you!!!! this is such a long journey!

Glad you have done your research! Pat on the back for you!

Be careful though, your in the same pickle I'm in. I have a lifetime prescription limit on fertility medication as well. It's $7500 and once it is gone, its gone. One round of medication for IVF is between $6000 to $6500 depending what your RE prescribes. I now have $1300 left over, but my medical coverage is great and covers four full rounds of IVF (procedure/doctor fee wise). So my option, if my Husband and I wanted to continue, we would have to start pulling out $5000+ personal loans for each attempt. For us and the uncertainty, this was not a good option.

I do know and understand that you are doing IVF with Donor, so your chances/odds are in your favor. I highly suggest you constantly ask you RE to stop the process if there will not be a good egg retrieval. This is just so you can safe any medicine expense possible. Sorry to sound so protective of you, but I know the "burn" all too well.

OTH: My IUI finally happened this past Sunday/Monday. My cycle dragged out. I'm sore, but I'll manage. Now the two week wait starts. Hopefully I won't go crazy. Thanks for asking!

    Good luck!

oh i sure hope it works for you this time :) i hate that 2week wait! how dreadful....

wow i didnt think meds were that much...yikes...we do have our credit line prepared in case but i bet we max out first attempt than...we already discussed what we can afford and all we are planning on doing is one full cycle and if that doesnt work one FET...if there are any eggs of good quality frozen..other than that we will either have to save again or call it quits...its all so frustrating..there are no guarantees with anything! thanks so much for your advice

    how are you feeling?
