Has anyone used the Instead soft cup??

moewhitmoewhit Senior Member
Hi Ladies!
Well I'm gearing up for round 3 of piggy back IUIs in a few weeks. There's just way too much info floating around in cyberspace! I was wondering if anyone has used the Instead Softcups as a fertility aide? These cups look like diaphrams and are an alternative to tampons. They are flexible cups that are inserted and sit in the space just under the cervix to collect menstural flow for up to 12 hours. So apparently people are putting them in after sex to keep the sperm near where it needs to be. The concept sounds logical huh? So a went to CVS and plunked down $9 for a box of 14. I'm going to try this right after the IUI since I usually lay on the table for about 10 min. (Hope I can put it in without sitting up!)
Any thoughts ladies???

It’s a waste of time and money. Once the sperm is in the uterus it cannot come out or fall out. The fluid that many think comes out is the cervical mucus that loosens after and IUI. Also if you want to save some money try doing one IUI at 36 hours post trigger.

I honestly have trouble getting the Instead cup to work for my period, it always seems to leak. So, who knows, it might cause the same trouble if you don't insert it just right for sperm.

I read in a sex book that if you keep your hips upright for 30 minutes, it inceases the chance of getting pregnant, because the semen has a chance to pool around your cervix. My friend did this and got pregnant right away.

So has anyone watched the movie "Back up plan" with Jennifer Lopez? She has a scene where she has her legs lifted up in the air. It's funny, but I thought about that scene after my first IUI. Its weird because my doctor only had me lay down with my legs bent for the 15 minutes I waited...but I felt like I should have been tilted more...or maybe lift my legs up....so needless to say, I felt like a big freak-o laying down with my legs lifted, then lifted hips....

What do you ladies do? I just want to do it right...and not waste another month. Thanks.

The lifting and tilting only really matters when having normal sex or doing ICI. The reason for that is the better you can keep the sperm by the cervix the better chance of it getting inside. However with IUI its already in the uterus and isnt going anywhere. The reason for the tip at that point is to help push them along to the tubes but they are not going to fall back out.

Haven't used the instead soft cup but I agree with Bluesky, one IUI 36 hours after the trigger is all it takes. It worked for me. My doctor's table is built to tilt the hips after she's finished with the IUI. So we did the tilt all 3 times but this last time I think they forgot about me and I ended up tilted almost 30 minutes but I didn't mind! I had my BFF with me and she was keeping me company. All you need is some good follies!!

Moe, are you doing injectibles this time? I did this last time and got my BFP.

    Hi Latebloomer!
Again congrats!! I'm not doing injectibles because my fertility center is more than 100 miles away from where I moved. I started this process in November and just knew it would have worked by now. But here I am about to do IUI#3 and in the meantime to make things more complicated I took a contract job in Feb which moved me away (but it's only temporary). So I discussed the injectibles route but it requires frequent monitoring and as of now it's stressful enough driving 200 miles roundtrip on cycle days 3, 11, 12, 13. I will be ending my contract by the Fall, so if this next IUI doesn't work then I will take a few months off and then when I move back home do the injections.

Oh, just filled my prescriptions for trigger shot and Clomid and I only had to pay a copay for each. Just $45 :-) I was thrilled because nothing was covered the last two times. So now I'm going to dig up my receipts and try to get reimbursed!! I will call to see if the injectibles are covered just in case.

As for the table tilt, mine was just a flat exam table so I balanced on my elbows while holding up my hips for as long as my back could take it

Lots of sticky baby dust ladies!!

I did use one when I got pregnant with the triplets, I did not use one for baby #4. My RE didn't think they really help but didn't mind placing one for me right after the IUI if I asked.

Ladies thanks so much for all of your thoughts and comments. I'm leaning more towards using Instead. When I used them for my periods years ago, I didn't have any leakage and got pretty good about placing them with a few initial adjustments. After all there's no harm and I already have them :geek: I'm certainly not looking for triplets but one or two sticky heathy beans
