At home or with a Doc?

lemonfizlemonfiz Junior Member
Hi,

My partner and I want to start a family and we are about to order our chosen donor elixir
We tried this once before a few months back and went with an IUI, and this time around we are thinking about trying at home, but ... well, how do we go about it? We're also living in a new state (NC) and don't have a Dr. yet, let alone a gyno or a fertility specialist. We would like to increase our chances, considering the costs, so we were wondering about fertility drugs, should we go for that? and if we do, does my partner need to be under the supervision of a fertility specialist or can the Family Dr do it? What do we need for the at home fertilization? What are our chances with an ICI at home, vs. the IUI? We'll track her ovulation with the home kits, but if anyone has ideas we're listening.
Also, should we get a few vials at a time? If we do, can we store them in our own freezer? ;) or do we need to have them stored elsewhere?
...A lot of questions I know...Any help will be appreciated!
:P
Thank you,
lemonfiz

Hey Lemonfiz! Congrats on starting the journey of becominng parents!! My only experience has been with a fertility doctor and IUI. My partner and I had thought about trying ICI but then I had heard a lot of stories that people were not as successful as with IUI. Not saying that ICI never works but i think you have to know what your doing. My fertility docs monitiored a full monthly cycle before we even were going to start trying just to make sure that I didn't need any fertility drugs to get preggers. I wish my docs were in NC!! They are awesome and amazing! We went in for my first IUI June 8th, 9th and now I;m 5 weeks pregnant :D That does not happen the first time for everyone. I was lucky to be able to use a "natural cycle." As far as storing the extra vials, I'm pretty sure you will have to get them stored somewhere. They are kept frozen in liquid nitrogen tanks. You should also check with your insurance to see if anything is covered for the fertlity specialist. I had a lot more covered than wht I thought would be. I hope some of my rant helped!! Good luck and best wishes :)

Kleonard83 you are sooo lucky!!! I wish i could have as much luck as you. We are on our 3rd IUI on clomid...how many follicles did you have on your natural cycle?
  • Kleonard83Kleonard83 Junior Member Junior Member
Hey Manda210! I am so so lucky and feel so blessed to have this happen on the first try. I'm pretty sure I had only 1 completely mature follie. My doc does a lot of bldwrk monitoring and Ultrasounds. He actually did one insemination for 2 days in a row. I have always had normal periods since the age of 11, just longer cylces than 28 days. Have your periods been normal? Where do you live? I live in PA, my doc belongs to RMA of Philadelphia. I hope everything works out for you!!! Sending good baby making vibes your way :D

Hi Kleonard, Congrats on your BFP! I just started going to RMA of Philly but I'm on injectables because although I have very regular periods and ovulate like clockwork, I. Am 41 years old. I hope that it works for me too. Initially I was seen by Dr Gocial but as you well know the monitoring is very frequent so I've been seen by all docs except Castenbaum. Tomorrow I'm seeing Dr Gutmann in King of Prussia. Hopefully my IUI will happen around July 7th.

I would love to hear about your experiences at RMA. Good luck and please keep us posted with updates!

    Kleonard83,

My cycles are about the same every month but like you mines longer then 28 days....my doc never even suggested monitoring me to see how things are normally...i am monitored by Ultrasound about day 11 then they normally schedule my IUI 2 or 3 days later...i dont get bloodwork done till after the IUI...ive seen people talk about getting their E2 levels but my docs never tested me before an IUI...i live in PA also but not near philly.... I go to Geisinger in WilkesBarre.....its great tho that it worked out for you the first time!! Def saves you a lot of money....we are running low on money so im not sure what we will do if this time doesnt work....this try just NEEDS to work =)

Hey Moe! I love RMA :) They have been so so helpful and everyone there is so nice. My doc is Dr. Freedman, although I have sen Dr. Castlebaum. He is very nice too :) I'm still really early but feel so lucky.

Manda210, I'm kind of surprised your docs don't monitor bloodwork during your cycle. I guess every where is different, but I would think it would be hard to say when your actualy going to ovulate. My doc has me in on day 3 of my cycle for bloodwork and ultrasound, then back day 12 or 13 for bloodwork and ultrasound again. It seems like a lot but they know what they are doing!!! I'm still super early so I'm not totally out of the woods yet. I wish you lots of luck and keep us posted.

I heard this stat from our NP:
    6% chance with ICI
    12% chance with IUI
15% chance with IUI if you do two per month

    In an article i read:
25% for a straight couple trying the old-fashioned way

    I can't source this because I don't remember where I read this.

I think that is crazy that for IUI it's such a low percentage. I wonder how many fertility docs actually each patiants cycle through bloodwork and intravaginal ultrasounds. It seems to me that if all docs did this there would be more BFP!!!

Hi! My partner and I are trying to decide to go with our doctor with an IUI and meds. or at home. We had been assuming for a period of time we do the IUI w/our dr. but started to get "anxious" about all the meds. and the HSG he has us scheduled for when I am a healthy 29 year old. We are really lost about how to make this decision because we obviously want to increase our chances but we also want it to be as "natural" and not medicalized as possible. It's so hard to know. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't worry about the hsg, actually I would recommend it. All it does is check to see that your tubes are open. You can be healthy and still have blocked tubes. It would be a shame to try a few cycles and have them be unsuccessful then have an hsg and find out that you have a blocked tube. I think it just helps to let you know that the more "natural" approach can work. The test is very simple doesn't take too long and you are told the results right there. That's just my opinion though ;) sometimes the meds help to time the procedure better but you can also do opks at your house and then go in when it spikes. You need to do what feels right for you.
Good luck and baby dust too you!

    Hello Lemonfiz,

I too live in NC and my partner and I (me) are 8 weeks pregnant! Yeah donor 2918. Hoping that all goes well for he next 7 months. There are several fertility Dr.'s in NC. I live in Charlotte, NC and have used REACH. Asheville is the most gay friendly out of all cities in NC with 3 fertility Dr.'s that I know of. Raliegh/Durham has Duke and UNC. Both very gay friendly. Whether you choose home insemenation or with a Dr., I wish you the best of luck!

    Hi Lemonfiz,

There's at home insemination kits you can buy, we got one from www.totalconception.com, it's great it comes with a speculum, ovulation predictors, basically everything you would need minus the sperm...and here lies the problem, b/c we bought it (it was around $200-300 if i'm not mistaken) but never got a chance to use it since we can't find a doctor willing to sign a form allowing us to take the sperm home ( & i believe Fairfax only delivers to a dr's office). So, although an IUI in a doctor's office is not the route we wanted to take (an at-home insemination would have been much more intimate & my partner would have had a more major role than holding my hand in the dr's office) we figured it's the quickest route to a pregnancy & today was IUI try#2 ....Best of luck to you!! If you figure out a way to secure donor sperm for an at-home insemination I'd love to hear all about it!

After much researching and consulting with a doctor we decided on IUI.. the doctor and the hospital is great! They monitor the cycle from the first day to ovulation to insemination. The idea is to time the egg release and inseminate to increase your chance for preggo.. Actually the success rate is about the same as a heterosexual couple. The window is always 2 to 3 days.. its like 15 to 25% considering everybody is healthy. Also the sperm quality is more active with an IUI, because they are "washed" sperm which is free from semen and other material. The process also separates the sperm leaving only the best sperm cells. Being that the sperm is inserted high into the uterus there is no issues with cervical mucus which sometimes causes issues for the sperm and the cervix doesn't play much of a huge role in insemination like in a ICI. I would only use a ICI if we had a donor that was easily available and known.. so that we had access to the sperm in huge quanitity. It's important to use an "Instead Cup" with an ICI.. to keep the semen close to the cervix.. and having an orgasm would help to suck the semen up from the cervical pool and into the right spot. With all of this into consideration it's no wonder the success rate (while less expensive) has a lower rate of 10 to 15%. You have to do what is best for you and your partner however.... So wishing you well in what ever process you choose.. Good Luck! :D

cincifam- we are in the same boat. I am 26 yrs old and my partner is a healthy 29 yr old. We have decided to do ICI at home for 6 months the "old fashioned way" . We want it to be as "normal" as possible and with the least amount of drugs. Look at it like this- just because we are lesbians does not mean we are infertile it just means we need to get sperm in other ways.

I have been reading a lot of posts and it seems most couples do IUI because it raises your chances of getting pregnant thus less money is thrown out for sperm monthly. But I don't believe the chances are that much higher then trying it at home.....

Do what makes you 2 feel more comfortable. id say ICI for a few months as long as who ever is carrying the baby is healthy. If that doesnt work move on to your next options.

    Good luck!

I called Fairfax and they can mail it right to your home. Its in a container and viable for 7 days. You just need your Dr. to sign off on it. Luckily we are not far from Virginia so we are going to pick our sperm up each month and save the mailing fee....
