Male infertility - healthy female

k&bk&b Senior Member Senior Member
So I am new to all of this, and full of questions/fears etc...
My husband is not able to have children, and we have decided to go donor route. We will be meeting with our fertility doc next week to let her know. I am 28, in good health and physical shape, my ovaries are good, I had plenty of follicles in each ovary and everything seems to be in working order. That being said, though I have not put myself in the position to be, I have never been pregnant. What it the average number of tries it takes for someone in my position? Should I ask my dr to go ahead and put me on clomid to be on the safe side?
Thanks in advance for your time and input!!

My husband and I are in the same boat as you are. We are currently in our tww with our 4th iui. I would recommend patience through this process and confidence in yourself that it will work when the time is right. It is different for everybody. I have seen women on here get pregnant on the first try with great samples and I have been women get pregnant with low samples on the 5th try. So who really knows why it happens the way in which it does! They say the average is 4 to 6 tries.

I did unmedicated cycles the first three times, this last shot was with clomid 50mg. There are side effects to clomid so I bet your doctor might have you try a cycle to two unmedicated. I wish you and you husband lots of luck and patience in this journey and I am here if you ever have questions or need to just vent.

We have the same dynamic, our IF is male factor only. My first pregnancy took 6 IUI's. My second pregnancy took 2 IUI's. For me the difference was monitoring, I did my first 5 IUI's based off OPK's, and I think our timing was off even though they were coming back +. When I had an ultrasound and trigger shot to be sure my IUI was timed right my success rate went way up. Good luck!

Thank you both so much....I will keep you posted on how it all goes.I have an appointment with my dr. next week to discuss when we will do our first iui, and I am glad to have some info to go in with!

I would trust your doctor and not 'insist' on procedures because of what other people have/have not had success with.

In my case, we did 4 unmedicated IUIs and 2 with medications. But every woman is different so the medical advice is different for everyone. Remember clomid has side effects and has a higher rate of multiple pregnancies. I wouldn't run the risk of multiples if my doctor felt I would do it without the medicine.

I will find out in 2 weeks... We will probably do our first round un-medicated in October.

So I am going in for my first try in November. October did not work out timing wise because of a work conference.... :(
But...I am excited/nervous for our first try. It will be with Clomid, because my progesterone was a little low.
    I'll keep you posted!!

Hi there! We are also in this same situation but I am 37 so starting kind of late! My husband has zero sperm unfortunately and we don't know why but because of this we're going with DS. I have been tracking my ovulation these last 2 months and have had a peak ovulation using an OPK. Before we knew about the zero sperm we tried for a year and I always ovulated and have very consistent cycles with my Fertility Dr. says is the best predictor of ovulation/fertility. So fingers are crossed.

I would love to find a buddy on here to talk and also see how other's husband's are doing with this as it's hard on mine and he so wants to find a donor "just like him" but that's hard!!

Seattle, have you guys tried the face matching option that fairfax does? That might be a cool way to find someone with a similar look to your hubby.

Thanks for all the great replies on here! We are trying Fairfax but the photos of my husband just don't seem to get the right donors - but we have found one that we really like that we feel looks like my hubby but it says "please call" under IUI's available.

We're really hoping for a November IUI as I know it takes several months.

Let's stay in touch as we go through this journy.

Hello, I don't know if anyone is still active on this forum, but my husband and I are a young couple both 28, recently diagnosed with male infertility. How did you work through this and make a final decision on choosing a donor and what has been the outcome for your family?

Hi Sk9017. I am just coming across this thread as my husband and I are dealing with MFI. After nearly 4 years of unprotected sex and 1 year of actively trying, we got tested and turns out he has unexplained, non obstructed azoo. We have spent the past several months coming to grips with things and completing more testing on my fertility health (all normal). Planning to try for our first IUI this fall. Things have been a bit stressful. We don’t dwell on things together too much. He seems to have come to grips with this being the only option for us starting a family at this time (not interested in adoption at the moment). Not the easiest time in our lives, but we are trying to remain strong and not let this get the best of our happiness and marriage. What is your story?
