Should I even try?

My partner and I tried at home with a private donor. It never worked :( Now we are going to a fertility specialist to help out and have a few donors selected as favorites. I am a 44 year old Type 1 diabetic with normal periods and cycles. Should I even try? Am I crazy to think this will even work? I have a daughter already who is now 17. I am in good shape and healthy. We see the doctor on August 19th for testing. Am I wasting my time and money?

I don't think there's anything wrong with a consult. If you get there and talk to the doc and decide it's not right or you then make the decision at that point. I think the fact that you've been trying means you want a child. But I'd say with the combination of age and type I, its now (soon) or never. With my upcoming iui I find that the biggest expense is the donor. Also check and see if your insuance will cover anything. Good luck with your decision and baby dust to you if you try.

    Hi KC!

My partner is also a Type 1 diabetic! She was diagnosed in her late teens (she's early 30's now) and is very healthy. Our 5-month-old daughter was conceived via IUI and donor sperm (my eggs and I carried). I'll tell you what our Reproductive Endocrinologist told us at our consult regarding my partner and the diabetes issue....she said the risk of passing the Type 1 diabetes on is very small, however our doctor did advise us against having my partner carry the baby. Even though my partner uses an insulin pump to manage her diabetes, our doctor felt that the effect of pregnancy hormones, required weight gain, etc., could cause complications with her diabetes and make her blood sugar difficult to regulate. She said that she not does not advise fertility treatments for any diabetics whose A1C is greater than 5.0. So....in lieu of this consult we've decided for baby #2 that we will harvest my partner's eggs and I will carry them (IVF). Perhaps this might be a good option for you and your partner? Best of luck in whatever you choose to do! And if you have any questions about IUI please feel free to PM me - I'd be happy to help if I can!! :)

That's great advice. I know pregnancy can be very hard on someone with type I. Good luck!
