when it just won't work

Hi ladies,
I have been going at this for over a year now and have six failed iui's. Every month everything looks good, clomid has helped to produce multiple eggs, but nothing happens. After the first three, single iui's, I tried doing them back-to-back (2 iui's each cycle). Of course insurance won't cover anything when your single so i am about out of funds, so IVF is not going to be a current option. I tried reflexology massage, grape juice, pineapple, and cough syrup. I have tried a few different donor, both with and without reported pregnancies.
Has anyone had any luck after 6 iui's? Is it worth one more try?
I have already made an appt for accupuncture, but if anyone has ANY suggestions that may help, PLESAE let me know.

    Tryinalone,
I can only imagine how frustrated and discouraged you may be. I know that I have read on this forum that for some women it took 6-8 times before it took. Unfortunately none of us have that crystal ball! Boy do I wish I had. Remember for the average couple it can take 6 months the same amount of time that you have tried. Have you sat down and discussed your concerns with your doctor to find out what he or she says. Does your doc think there could be another issue or is it just that the stars have not aligned for you? I wish it was just egg meets sperm and bang your pregnant. There are things that we have no control over that have to be in align.

Keep your head up! Picture that baby in your arms and it will happen! Remember that 6 times is not an outrageous number of iui attempts it just seems overwhelming too us! It does NOT mean that it won't happen! It just means it hasn't happened YET!

Lots of baby dust too you! :D

Thank you Robin from all the girls that have been doing iuis for what feels like forever!
    It can happen..and WILL happen

Baby Dust to all of us!!!

Call your insurance again.... I'm in a same sex partnership, so they won't pay for us either UNTIL we have had 6 unsuccessful IUI's, because then it becomes an infertility issue. Your insurance might be the same way.
  • sibemomsibemom Member Member
All insurance is different... sounds like you're a lucky one. My insurance says infertility is defined as:
"Infertility - The medically documented inability to conceive with unprotected sexual intercourse between a male and female partner for a period of at least 12 months. The inability to conceive may be due to either the male or female partner."

Their coverage for infertility counseling, testing, and treatment carries the caveat:
"If testing is required, cost sharing may apply as outlined under Diagnostic Services. Treatment includes coverage for the correction of a
physical or medical problem associated with infertility. Infertility drug therapy may or may not be covered depending on your group’s
    prescription drug program."

So even if I try for a year w/ IUI, too bad for me.

    Robin,
    Thanks for words of encouragement!
I'm giving it one more try this cycle. I will talk wth the doc tomorrow and make an accupuncture appointment.
    Fingers crossed!
Otherwise, I need some time to save for ivf

    Hi There -
I see this question was asked awhile ago but I just joined and am reading through some of the posts. I tried 5 IUIs to no avail. I decided to try accupuncture weekly for about four months then went in for my 6th IUI (also with a different donor this time) and it worked. I was told it could take 9 to 12 tries. So please don't give up. I know how discouraging it can be but all I can say is if you've done all of the appropriate tests and everything is fine with you and your body then it will work if you keep going. I say trust it will happen when it's supposed to (and it will!)

I'm unmarried as well and my insurance has the same caveat. I simply said that I've been having unprotected sex with my boyfriend for that long - no need to prove it or provide a marriage certificate. In my case it is true, but don't know how your ins. co. could prove otherwise.

I had nine iui procedures - 8 with one donor, the last with a second donor. Maybe the donor you are using is the wrong one for you?
  • maria2maria2 Senior Member Senior Member
So I completely understand....although I've been trying for over a year, I've only had 4 IUIs....I say only 4...but they felt like a million disappointments. I felt down and out...and these lovely ladies kept me going after each disappointment. One particular wonderful member, hopefulchar, typed this all out for me!!!! and i felt encouraged....and actually am now thinking about doing it one more time in January! thank you ladies!

Here's what she typed out from different ladies on the forum:

I tried 5 IUIs to no avail. I decided to try accupuncture weekly for about four months then went in for my 6th IUI (also with a different donor this time) and it worked. I was told it could take 9 to 12 tries. So please don't give up

I know the pain of the monthly negatives...or Bloody show, meaning something took but didn't continue. It's aweful and leads to feeling desperate. I did 9 IUI attempts. My son was # 9. I was ready to try ivf with an egg donor... I didn't believe the ninth attempt worked but a little voice popped into my head one night..."Heh mom, I'm here!"

My partner and I had the same problem. We had our first child in 2008. It took us 7 tries using IUI with a fertility specialist

Good luck to all of you out there and stay positive....it took up 14 attempts to get pregnant with our now 4 yr old and only 4 tries with our 2 yr old.

.. I succeeded on my 7th IUI - so never give up! I tried a couple natural (unmedicated) IUI's By medicated, I meant injectables... I succeeded on my 7th IUI -

We are on our 7th IUI.Yikes! FAST FORWARD 2 WEEKS.... Well girls, drumroll please!! Survey says, B to the F to the P!!:P The miracle we have been waiting so long for is here. I'm still in shock!!

IUI #6 I was again on Clomid plus I did a couple ultrasounds and a trigger shot to time things just right...that was my 1st BFP.

It took us five tries--3 with clomid and 2 with injectibles until I conceived and I was 42 at the time. I'm amazed but it worked!! Best of luck to you

I was using a previous donor and switched after 6 unsuccessful attempts. I got pregnant on the first insemination

We went through nine attempts with our first donor, then switched to another and were successful the first try.

Yay Maria! First of all I am so happy to hear that you are going to try again. It's the best news I have heard all day! It also made me so happy that I could help. I have often gone back to that posted when I am feeling desperate or hopeless to remind myself that it will happen for me too. I just need to stay positive and persistent. Never loose sight of the goal.
  • maria2maria2 Senior Member Senior Member
hopefulchar - Thank you! I visit your post often because it gives me hope...it was just so sweet of you and I appreciated it then...but I think I appreciate it more now when I am feeling better. I actually emailed it to another friend who is on IUI #9 (but not on this forum) and she loved it! it gave her a lot of hope, so your encouragement and love goes beyond this little forum.

I just have been looking around on TV and around me and see babies everywhere....or reminders of babies....just realized that I can't imagine not being a mom...I don't know how many IUIs are in my future b/c insurance covers none of the injectables.... :x but i know I will do one more...and we'll see after that. hopefully i'll get the BFP then! :D

good luck ladies...stay encouraged and positive!!!!
  • hopefulcharhopefulchar Senior Member Senior Member
There are babies everywhere but I am also noticing the people that have struggled or who are struggling just like the rest of us. I saw that Khloe Kardashian has to do ivf...i felt so bad for her when i saw it on E! the other night (ok yes i admit it..i watch that crap) and Guiliana Rancic was reporting the story. I just wanted to cry for both of them that no only are they struggling with infertility but they have to do it in front of the whole world.

On a happy note..I am so glad to hear that you are doing so much better...i knew it was just a matter of time until i heard from you again. I knew you just needed to cool off and regroup. Your friend that is on her 9th iui is she also using donor sperm? Tell her that I too am on lucky number 9 and i feel it in my bones this time. THings seem to be changing and i know a positive is right around the corner. I will have a baby next christmas...i know it!

I hear you on the injectables not being covered...that is why we never did them before. My insurance actually covers nothing! I have been on the resolve website and have signed many petitions to help get laws passed to help the insured get the insurance they deserve.

I have started injectables and a trigger this cycle and I hope and Pray that that is the boost needed to get my bfp. My thyroid is also at a good place so.....HERE IS TO MY CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!
  • Anne72Anne72 Senior Member Senior Member
Hopefulchar - You and I can both put in a claim for a Christmas miracle. I'm on IUI#7 and am being positive that I'm going to get a BFP on the 20th and I am going to carry a healthy baby to term! We can do it!

Maria - So happy to welcome you back to the quest. January will be lucky!
  • maria2maria2 Senior Member Senior Member
@hopefulchar....wow, I didn't know that Khloe K is doing IVF....yes, I watch trashy TV too! LOL...I need it! Poor Guiliana Rancic...watched her show only b/c I was watching her and Bill go through their fertility process. Wow, it's so crazy.

Yes, my friend is using donor sperm...she bought from fairfax and then changed to another cryobank in california (where we live)....she's doing her injectables now, so her IUI should be in another week and a half.

Ok, I just signed the letters to support the Family Act of 2011....if others want to sign it:

    http://www.resolve.org

Thanks for sharing that! I hope it'll help us all with no insurance coverage for fertility!!!

Thanks Anne! Good luck to you both!!!

    Hi,
If you are willing to take a lone and are 38 y/o or under, please consider IVF with Shady Grove Fertility-they have a money back guarantee program. I did 5 IUIs and spent 7K, mostly on fertility injections without success. I am 44 y/o and my dr. said to me that if I were to use a donor egg, that I have a significant (he said 98% chance) of conceiving. So, I am now using a donor egg, donor sperm and I have a scheduled embryo transfer date this friday, Dec 16th. Don't give up. One way or another, you will have a child.

    Maria,
Here's to me and you in January. I will be taking off two cycles to just relax and think some more about this journey. I want to really chart my cycle this next time using BBT and the OPK's. It is all about the timing and I have thought that I have been too every time. So, January it is. A BFP would be a great way to start off 2012. Just think ladies, we can be those pregnant women in bikinis!

I love it! For once I won't have to worry about my belly being too big!
  • maria2maria2 Senior Member Senior Member
    LOL Anne!!!! love it!!!

Also sweetpea....if you have a smartphone, there are a lot of apps that help you predict....i have one on my droid that i like a lot....i input temps, mucus, your menstrual period, and many many other symptoms. i love it. it's not perfect, but gives you a good idea. then you can see it...mine shows a calendar as well as a chart to show you months of your input...love that.

unfortunately, i'm not under 38! but thanks for the input...

I don't have a smartphone, but I will see if I can find a website to imput all of data into. Who knew you needed to be a research scientist to get pregnant!

I started this thread about a year ago and I am 9dp3dt from my first IVF. I just took a test and BFN. :(
Its my mothers birthday and she has been as hopeful as me and I was hoping to be able to gt her a pandora bead to let her she was finally going to get a grandbaby. Guess not.
Now I can't stop crying... I know I should wait, my beta isn't till Tuesday... but I just want to crawl into bed and have my little pity party. Why????
Becuase of the whole single thing, insurance doesn't cover anything (I am seriously considering asking my single friend to get married tempoarily just so this can get covered) and after, i lost count how many failed iui's, now this I don't know what to do....
I am not ready to give up on the one dream I have always had of being a mom, but when do you stop? I already made the change from "when" I get married to "if" I ever get married, I am just not prepared to change from "when" to "if" I have kids.

Could really use some words of encouragement!
  • Anne72Anne72 Senior Member Senior Member
You have to believe it will work. It took me 11 IUIs and 2 IVF to get my BFP. But I'm now 6 weeks and praying hard. I've been bleeding for the past week but we've seen the heartbeat.

Have you considered adoption as a plan B?
