pain during IUI...

I had my 2nd IUI today and the pain during insemination literally brought tears to my eyes....I've been warned by the doctor that I might experience "mild" cramping, and granted my pain tolerance is pretty low, there was nothing mild about it...this is our second try and the pain was even worse than the 1st...has anyone else experienced pain during the procedure? i'm starting to think there might be something wrong with me & I'm wondering if it's always going to be this painful..:( & whether there's anything I can do to make it better? are pain meds safe to take for the IUI?

I never had pain with either of my IUI's nor did my partner with hers. I was told by the doc that if it hurts, the timeing isnt right. The only reason it would hurt is your cervix wasnt open all the way.

    Lauranval,
I have never had any pain during my iui's. The doctor has never mentioned any pains. I have had some cramping afterward but that is usually a few days after. Sometimes there can be cramping oif there is any seminal fluid because that does not usually make it past the cervix. I would definately talk to the doctor about your pain level. The procedure itself should be quick and relatively painless.

I would agree with bluesky that if your cervix was not open that would be painful, however your doctor should have been able to tell if your cervix was not open. If your tww does not end in a bfp then talk to the doc about your concerns!

Here's hoping you don't even have to worry about it bc you get your bfp!

Sending lots of baby dust your way!

    Hi Lauranval,

I have had several IUI's and almost all have involved pain. For the last several, I have learned to relax and I don't let them start until I am breathing well and am fully relaxed (as relaxed as you can be when you're in stirrups exposing your business!) :)

My issue, I believe, is that I have a tilted uterus. For the last three IUI's, they used the shortest speculum they have and I have to lay real low - butt off the table almost. I had my latest IUI this past Monday and again, I thought I was relaxed... but once that speculum went in, I tensed up and felt a lot of pain. The nurse removed it... tapped me on the left cheek and said "Relax this muscle...!!" I did... I breathed... and then no more pain...

That whole relaxing thing is easier said than done, I know. But with the tilted uterus (how does THAT happen..?!?!?!) I know I have experienced less pain with the shorter speculum.

The actual IUI doesn't hurt at all.... It's everything leading up to it that does.

Oh, and I don't think I have the timing issues as I am monitored very closely... on Bravelle injections... this month also on Ganirelix.. then HCG shot to time things right. By the time I got to the doctor's office, my ovaries felt like they were about to burst..!! (Or like they had already...! I had about 5 mature follicles at 20mm+. Ouch!)

    Hope this has helped.

    Take care,
    Janet

    Lauranval,
I never thought about the pain from the spectulum, I guess I just assume that everyone experiences that ;) I guess that question would be is the pain from the spectulum as Janet suggested or is from the actually iui because I think that makes a difference in the questions and possible solutions. I also have something tiltled the uterus or the cervix one of those! So the spectulum has always hurt I just grin and bear it and hope that it will be over soon and the doctor will find everything quickly!

Here's still hoping that you don't have to do it again because this time worked!! :D

I am supprised with the tilt they use the shorter one. I have the same issue, but it also sits farther towards the back of my body thus need the longest one they got in order to reach the cervix.

Good point bluesky10. But I don't really know which way the tilt goes. (Can it tilt in either direction..? I must read up on this... I 'm embarrassed to admit that I am this misinformed about my own body...)

However, three IUI's ago, I was successful in getting pregnant (with the shorter speculum.) Unfortunately, it ended in a m/c at about 10 wks. Therefore, I trust that with the shorter speculum, they are able to reach my cervix and get those swimmers where they need to be! :D

In another 10 days I'll be able to let you know if it worked again.

    Fingers crossed,
    Janet
