Prenatal Vitamins

dreamsabc123dreamsabc123 Senior Member Senior Member
Hi everyone,
I have a question about prenatal vitamins and I would love for you to share your thoughts and opinions about them. I don't plan on having IUI until next year sometime in Sept. Do you think now would be way too soon to start taking prenatal vitamins? Also, which prenatal vitamins do you like or recommend? Lastly, is there a prenatal vitamin on the market that is good, but also not HUGE? I bought prental vitamins from Centrum and they are huge!! Thanks!!!

My partner is taking prenatal One a Day vitamins which also comes with a fish oil pill. She only started taking them this week when we got our BFP!! I think a year in advance is WAY early... a regular multivitamin that has some folic acid in it should be fine. One of my docs didn't even recommend prenatals because she said the vitamins are so strong that it's the reason a lot of women feel nauseous.

    Dreams,
I have been taking prenatals for 8 months now. I don't think it would be n issue for you. I take them in the evening after dinner, that cuts back on the nausea, actually I don't have that side effect at all takingit in the evening. I use the cvs brand of prenatals. They are a little bid but really just long and thin. I have no problema taking them. As soon as I decided to start the doc said start taking them. Ask your doc. But the folic acid couldn't hurt! And since I have started taking them, I have not been sick. Coincidence maybe but they don't hurt!

I read somewhere that the follies that eventually mature have been growing for a while.

    Hope this helps!

    Hey Dreams,

My partner just started taking Rainbow Light's Complete Prenatal Care Vitamins. It's a package of 2 vitamins - Prenatal one Multivitamin and DHA 250 Smart Essentials. She found these to be highly recommended. I know what you mean about the pills being huge :D These pills are pretty large.

Hope you find the ones that are right for you!

I would double check with your doctor. But I started taking pre-natals two months before I started trying and the doc definitely wanted me on them before I started trying. I'm now in my 5th tww.

I take Target's prenatals. They are big but I have not problem swallowing them. It is two pills - vitamin and fish oil. I take them at breakfast with zero nausea.

Okay, I will have to call my doctor on Monday then. I did start taking the Centrum prenatal ones last night and tonight and it has two pills, one of them is the fish oil pill. The fish oil one is the one I have a hard time swallowing. It just gets caught in my throat and then my gag reflex acts up. Not so good.

Most will want you to take them in advance. I started 2 months before I started trying so was already on them for 4 months when I got my BFP.

They are the most essential in the first trimester, and honestly I hardly take them anymore as I never remember. However, my doc did recommend that if you cant take them because they make you sick (I had bad morning sickness) to take the Flinstone kids vits.

I just called my doctor today and asked her and she said I should just start taking a multi vitamin and then two months before I want to do IUI then start taking the prenatal ones.

I think as long as you are taking a good prenatal multivitamin and a Omega 3 oil complex pill daily you should be fine. If you take it at night or in the morning should be what you prefer. I would recommend that you take it with food. Faras timing, you should take them if your trying to get pregnant, during and after. For professional advice I would consult with your doctor, however.

THANK YOU so much for this post, Dreams! Such a logical question to ask but the thought never crossed my mind- d'oh! LOL! So many things to consider and do, in prep for this process, that it's hard to know it all- which is why I'm so grateful to have found Fairfax and all the ladies on this forum :) ... I already take a Women's One-A-Day but I'm going to run to the store this weekend to pick up the Prenatal One-A-Day, as well, since I'm about 2 months out from my first attempt.

    Jaime,
I would probably replace your one a day with the prenatal. Not sure you should take both at once, just a thought.

    Ladies,

I am in the process of starting again and this will be my fifth IUI. I have been taking my prenatal vitamin but I have read somewhere on here about women taking fish oil capsules. What is this for and should I be taking it?

    Thanks!
  • GeminiJaiGeminiJai Senior Member Senior Member
Good looking out, Robin! I'm sure the Prenatal One-A-Day has everything in the "Women's" formula and then some- so no sense in taking them both.

JL- As for the fish oil, here's something I found online: "I'm currently 9 weeks pregnant, and just recently met with my physician. She reccomended taking 1 tablet of the fish oil supplement, and even gave a DHA based sample. She promoted taking it because it does increase fetal brain development. She also recomended taking the Nature's Made brand." ... I'm currently already taking the Nature's Made brand twice a day (morning & night) so I'll continue to do that but limit it to only one capsule a day. And, FYI- I store mine in the freezer, which helps eliminate "fish burps" - LOL ;)

ewwwww...fish burps??? Yuck. Well I bought the "finest natural" softgels today. It says "no fishy aftertaste" so I guess we will see.

Also, what's with this Pineapple Core thing I keep reading about on here? Apparently women are eating a pineapple core or at least part of the pineapple core after their iui to help the egg stick if or once it is fertilized. Does this really work? Because I CANNOT stand pineapple. lol
  • dreamsabc123dreamsabc123 Senior Member Senior Member
    I never heard of that......
  • robinrobin Senior Member Senior Member
    About the pineapple core,
you are supposed to just eat the core. You cut it into 5 pieces and eat 1 piece each night for the 5 days after the iui. it is very chewy and tough but does still taste like pineapple. You only eat a small portion of it each night. Too much pineapple is supposed to have the opposite effect. there is some chemical in the pineapple core that helps make the lining more pleasant for the fertilized egg. Does it work, don't know but along with a lot of other changes I made this month, the pineapple core was one of them and I got my BFP! My thought was it didn't hurt!

JL- The Nature Made sells 2 types of Fish Oil capsules: one with the phrase "No Fish Burps!" in bold red letters on the top right of the bottle, and one without that claim mentioned anywhere on it... So, obviously, I purchased the one claiming to help eliminate the yucky side-effect. And my brother (he's a nurse) is the one who recommended freezing them - which I figured wouldn't hurt, even in spite of the claim. I've been taking them all year and never had any problems- so I'm sure you won't have to worry about that side-effect with the softgels you bought, either. OH! And I did wind up purchasing the One A Day Women's Prenatal Complete Multivitamin + DHA last night... along with a random bottle of wine- so I'm sure the cashier was judging me so hard for my 2 item shopping trip , since she's clueless that I'm still 2 months away from ttc- LOL!

As always, Robin- thanks for the tip on the pineapple core... And I'm so excited for your BFP!
