    Hey Char,

I took progesterone in oil injections, it's so viscous, I drew it up with a larger gauge needle, and then used a slightly smaller one to inject (had my partner inject me, since I can't reach my backside).

I developed horrible welts, irritation, and pain. Both cheeks got warm to the touch, and the redness and swelling appeared to be cellulitis. I was unsuccessful in pregnancy, so stopped taking it, but this was the only way my progesterone was ever at a good level. The nurse's told me I couldn't take it again, since second reactions seem to be worse, but I think I might try anyway. I did inject myself once in the thigh when I was at work, and the pain was enormous. I think I had some minor nerve damage to both back cheeks for about 3 months, so please call the office!

One thing I thought (maybe wishful thinking) was that I hadn't been injected deeply enough into the tissue, and perhaps this affected the absorption, but please give the office a call to see if they want you to keep taking it. If it is cellulitis, this can cause some serious complications (symptoms warm to the touch, redness, soreness, and if there is any "streaking" - which is red marks along your skin, this can be cause for concern, not just discomfort).

Best of luck, sorry you are uncomfortable! Hope everything else is going well!

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about both of your issues with side effects from the injectible progesterone :( I go in for lab work on Thursday 4/12 to check my progesterone levels and, if they're not where they should be, I was told that I'd have to begin using vaginal suppositories- either once or twice a day. I hope the side effects from that form are much milder, should I need the extra boost of the hormone.

Char, how's the PIO going for you? I hope the welts have subsided... I started mine last night, and got a lot of advise about how to inject them, and am just hoping and praying for no repeated cellulitis! They did recommend putting the needle "all the way in", which is 1 1/2 inches! I have a lot of surface area back there, but it still seems too deep! I give IM shots all the time at work to kids who are out of control, and usually being restrained, so my main concerns are safety and speed, so the medicine can help the kid regain control... but i digress!
We gave the shot so much more slowly than before, made sure it was at a 90 degree angle, iced after, and about 5 minutes of massaging. Now to put 5 minutes of massaging into the medication schedule, right before I go to work, yeesh! But who doesn't like a nice rump rub?!

    Hope that made you laugh,

I had the same problem but after some reading from the Internet came up with a regimen of Ice for two minutes while doing that draw up the progesterone in the syringe and then warm it with hot wash cloth until your done with the ice. Do the injection then warm area with warm wash cloth and rub for a bit. My IVF was unsuccessful and trying again we are about to start injections again. Mine was so bad I could hardly walk until I found that regimen and it did help tremendously. Good luck....
