Unmedicated IUI?

Has anyone had success with an unmedicated IUI? We are getting ready for our first try, and I haven't decided whether we should try a natural cycle or if we should use meds. Any advice?

I got pregnant on my 4th un medicated IUI but lost the pregnancy at 8 weeks. I think it really depends on your age and medical history. I would skip the unmedicated ones today if starting over, but I'm 40.

We just had our first unmedicated iui we wont find out till next week for sure but.... signs are showing that it worked. Goodluck

I would agree with Anne. Skip the unmedicated cycles especially if you're over 35. Why waste time and money when you may only ovulate 1 or 2 eggs? The medicated cycles offer more "targets" not to say that you will end up with multiples just because you had 4 mature follies. What I learned through this process is that with an IUI, you may ovulate more than one egg BUT you have no idea what the quality is like. So yes, you may get the BFP only to have it end in m/c because something wasn't right with the egg or it didn't fertilize correctly. Of course, this also happens doing things the old fashioned way...It's a game of chance and there are no guarantees. What works for one woman doesn't work always work for another, there are too many variables to account for. Just hope for the best!

I only did medicated cycles starting when I was 40. I think it was about 3 cycles on Clomid and then 3 or 4 on injectables. ALL were not a success. I'm very healthy and ovulate like clockwork so my ovaries didn't need any help but my doctor wanted to be aggressive given my age.

Yes, you will find success stories about IUI's but that route can be extremely challenging and if time is not on your side, I would skip to medicated cycles, maybe 3 at the most and if that doesn't work look into IVF. Again, quite a bit has to do with your age (not only if your bloodwork and other test come back excellent).

Best of luck in making your decision.

Thank you for your advice! It's a lot to consider. Our first appointment with the RE is not for about 2 weeks, so we are looking at September at the earliest for our first IUI. I'll have to do some more reading first.

I'm wondering if any of you guys had any testing before starting besides bloodwork
My doctor wants to to a HSG? The dye test for tubes
he also has tons of injectables besides the gonal
    I'm 44
    Thanks

My doctor would not even perform the first IUI until he did a complete work up which included a HSG. Shouldn't be painful unless you have a clogged tube. I have a clogged tube on the right side and had to have corrective surgery to clear up. Some doctors might have left it since I still had one open tube. My doctor moved at a snails pace when it came to all the testing. It took me 5 months to get all the testing done in which I felt it should have only take 2 max. Did my first IUI in July started seeing the doctor in Feb. Every situation is different.

At 44 I would let them run the whole spectrum of testing. If your numbers aren't good the doctor should be honest and tell you that. If he thinks there is a chance with IUI he should also tell you that. Likely you will have to jump right into IVF due to your age, but don't get discouraged women at 44 can have babies without IVF. Best of luck to you. I'm rooting for you.

Let him do all the testing but at 44 I would go for the most aggressive offerings and jump right to IVF.

We have not yet had success, 1 unmedicated IUI in April, trying another this month, but my reasons for not wanting to be medicated are plenty. 1) I ovulate on my own 2) YOu can get a false positive pregnancy test if you are on clomid which would be devistating 3) I do not want multiples. The cost of child rearing today is extremely expensive when done properly. 1 blessing is enough. Then a child can get the time and attention that it deserves. Of corse everyone's lives and choices are different, but doing a cycle or 2 unmedicated is not a bad option, if you ovulate on your own.

I took clomid as part of my testing phase (clomid challenge ). My fibroids went crazy requiring surgical removal & delayed my pregnancy attempts by 6 months. I then got pregnant on my first attempt with a natural cycle IUI. I was 41. Because the fibroid was so large and deeply inbedded, my doctors decided it would be dangerous for me to have any contractions so I had to have an early scheduled c-section. My story is probably not the norm, but I for one am not a huge fan of unnecessary medical intervention. Give the natural cycle a try, but keep in mind your time frame. Best of luck!

Got pregnant 1st IUI unmedicated. Doc said pure luck. Did to Geritol for 2 weeks prior to ovulation. My friend suggested it. Also used proven donor.

Some docs don't want to make the leap to medicating... even if you are over 35... they cite the risks of cancers and other problems resulting from the meds.
