The no meds makes sense at your age but the no ultrasounds makes none, especially given your irregular cycle. I'd really fight for the u/s

Sounds like a waste of time and money. I would find a RE that would consider your desire to be monitored by ultrasound. I would be concerned that the clinic is just trying to earn more money from you/insurance company. I've also seen many women report that they missed their surge because OPKs are not reliable when compared to seeing things by ultrasound. You have to be assertive and make your needs known especially if things don't feel right or just don't seem logical. You don't have a regular cycle!! Personally I would want to be on the lowest dose of any of the Meds that stimulate follicle development (clomid, follistim, etc) and have bloodwork, u/s, and trigger shot. But you are 11 years younger than I am so I'm just thinking of a more aggressive approach. Not sure how pressed you are for time but it sometimes takes much longer than you could imagine. It's not an exact science!

Find another RE if your needs aren't being heard or met!

That's kind of how I feel about it. I feel like without an ultrasound it will be a waste of money. I really would like an ultrasound and trigger shot. What day of the cycle would an ultrasound be don on?

Ultrasounds can vary I think I had about 3 during a 10-14 day period. Something like one before Meds for baseline CD 3, then CD 6 or 7, and then CD 10 or 11. Usually triggering CD 11/12 if enough follies were mature 18 mm or bigger. Back to back IUIs were scheduled the following day and the next. I always had a great response with minimum 2-3 mature follies sometimes 5. You're younger so hopefully your success will come quickly.

I would push for the ultra sound.
For my first two cycles of IUI my doctor will not be using meds but I'll be monitored and given the trigger shot. I was reluctant to do the blood testing, but he said it is too expensive not to give yourself the best opportunity to get pregnant.
It is absolutely true. Speak up!!

That's a good sign that they are willing to work with you and what you ultimatly want. Oh, by the way fresh sperm can live up to 72 hours however frozen is much less than that, something like 12-24 hours (same thing for the egg once it's ovulated). The trigger shot is nothing, it's very thin needle and didn't hurt when I gave mine in the belly. What took some getting used to was giving myself injections in my muscles for the first 10 weeks!!! You do what you have to do....

Typically the average is 36 hours after the trigger shot. My IUI's varied anywhere from 12-40 hours doing back to back procedures. None of which were a success. It's a game of chance. Good luck and try not to stress about the details. It will happen when it's supposed to happen.

Always keep in mind that this is for you. Your life. Your the one finically n emotionally involved. You have to be your our advocate. Time n money is a lot to handle. Did medication is what u want to help make the follicle bigger then normal that what u do. If ultrasound is something you want to have the process go more efficient have the be preformed. True be told you are having them work for you in a way. This is all about u want. Good baby busting luck

I agree with everyone else on here and feel you should at the very least have a ultra sound done within the first 3 days of your cycle. Having a second one done is not as critical at your age, but could tell you the size of your follicles which is important. Doctors vary on the date of the 2nd ultra sound. I personally feel the trigger shot is not necessary unless you are not ovulating on your own or you are taking the injectables (which in that case you have no choice). Not sure what you insurance will cover. I just had my first trigger shot today after 3 unsuccessful IUI's and my insurance does not cover the cost. The shot was $199. In your case though your period is not regular and just based on that I would think the RE would want to offer the trigger shot to you since it is a known fact that ovulation tests don't always detect the surge.

Noveral is a particular brand - some sort of hcg, guessing it's the trigger shot. Mine today the vial didn't mention any brand and came from the hospitals pharmacy. Btw, chlomid is probably one of the least expensive fertilty medicine that you can buy but there are warnings that you could end up with multiples and taking it with a trigger shot increases that chance even more. Sounds like your progestrine test confirmed you are ovulating, that is good.

Since you only have 2 vials from your favorite donor who is no longer available if I were in your shoes I would try everything I could. The ovulation kits do work, I give you that but not always. I had 3 attempts all unsuccessful received positive results on the ovulation tests. Last month I was on fertilty med's, got no positive ovulation surge & missed my chance for the IUI. This month doctors decided to no longer rely solely on the ovulation test and do an ultra sound with trigger prior to the IUI. Every body is different so what works for one person might not for someone else. You have to decide for yourself what all you are willing to do. The more you educate yourself on the process the better you can relate and ask questions to your doctor. This forum is an excellent source of info. I learned more on here than I did from my doctor.

An HCG shot alone will not increase your chances of twins
  • robinrobin Senior Member Senior Member
The hcg shot can be given 24 hours before the iui its what my doc did. I never gave myself that shot. Many othersbut not the trigger shot. Your chance of multiples increases with more follies.

Don't worry about the number of vials. Stay positive and focus on each cycle. Cross the bridge of anothr donor when you have to if you have too! Things will work out the way they are meant too. We don't have all the control. So try to relax....i know easier said then done and focus on december then move on!
