Deciding how many embryos to transfer

maria2maria2 Senior Member Senior Member
Hi ladies,
I'm having my egg retrieval tomorrow! I can't wait...RE thinks I'll get about 7 mature follicles...I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I wanted to see how many embryos any of you transferred?! How did you make that decision?

Thanks ladies! Wish me luck!

My RE always wanted an aggressive approach based on my age 41-42, my previous cycles, response to Meds, and the general statistics of the practice. With all of the info I was provided the doc always gave me the final decision. My fresh IVF transferred 2 which ended in a chemical pregnancy. Then with the frozen transfer I said no to putting 4 back. I was comfortable with using 3 knowing I could have twins. The grading system was different from what I've seen on the forums. I think mine were good and fair day 5 blasts. It doesn't really matter because you can have success with "low grade" embryos. All up to chance.
    Good luck with everything today!!!!
    All the best

Thanks Moe! I had 10 eggs retrieved today! I'm still a little sore, but feel actually really good! I can't wait to find out how many are actually viable. They're supposed to call me tomorrow a.m.! I'll keep you posted!

Wow, 10 eggs is great Maria. I'm happy that it went well. I know you will be anxious for that phone call.

I had two transferred each time - both fresh cycles. The grades on the embryos were better the second time. I really wanted 3 transferred the second time but the doctor and my mom both convinced that 2 was enough - and it was!

Praying for you and good results and a successful 5 day transfer!

Thanks Anne! The embryologist called me today and said that out of the 10, 8 were mature and out of those....6 were "fertilized normally." It's weird, she thought that I should have transfer on day 3...I asked about day 5, but she didn't think I should risk it. Does that sound odd? I ask, since we have the same RE! =)

I also asked about the grades and she didn't say it....thought that was a bit odd...I'll ask again on Wednesday (when I am going to have the embryo transfer).

I would go ahead and call the doctor if you have questions. I thought they would do day 5 if you had more than 4-5 embryos
