First RE Appointment in January

jkrichjkrich Junior Member Junior Member
I have decided to move forward and become a single mother. I have purchased 4 vials and have placed them in storage for the time being. I will have my first RE appointment on January 12th. I had scheduled this appointment several weeks before finding out yesterday that my endometriosis has gotten a little worse. Any suggestions of what to ask the RE are much appreciated. There is so much info out there that it is overwhelming so having this organized forum will help me out.

I think for me, the big thing was my age (when I started I was 40 1/2 years old)...so I was concerned about my "success" in getting pregnant due to my age. You may ask RE about success rate with your age with IUI/IVF with meds or not....

I'm not 42 (almost 43) and I finally did my first IVF cycle and now waiting to confirm my "pregnancy" sticks...so I don't know your age, but I guess I'd ask about how you would move forward, first with IUIs? Then IVF? Meds? Clomid vs. injectables?

Have you done any preliminary tests? FSH, etc.? HSG?

Don't worry, you can ask your RE questions along the way too...I had a ton...make sure you start a list of questions and keep adding to it whenever you think of some. That's why you are having this consult...but you'll probably have lots more questions along the way.

    Good luck!

Don't let the fact that your endometriosis has gotten worse scare you. The best doc to ask about that or have them deal with it is your RE. Honestly I wish that I had spoken to an RE before having a dnc for fibroids and endometriosis..... they are specialists with that. You may have to have a dnc to clear out the endometriosis just ask but its an outpatient procedure and not that bad. I eventually had to have an ovary removed due to endometriosis and other complications. I was 37 when I started this process ad am now 38 with a 6 month oold son.

Questions to ask....hum....... what ever you have concerns about. Ask about the endometriosis, ask about age, ask about testing, ask about their protocol.... such as do they do ultrasounds to monitor you and do the trigger shot or do they have you do opk tests? When do they do the iui after either he trigger or the opk surge? Are they open every day? Some RE's like mine are open every day but Christmas others only have week day hours (this may be important to know). How many iui's do they want to do before talking about moving on to ivf. My doc said we will try this for 6 months and if no success talk about other options. Does your clinic do single iui's or back to back iui's. When do you talk about meds from the beginning such as clomid or femera and when do u talk about injections (some of this depends on your insurance and your ability to pay so you might want to check with your insurance). My insurance paid for all diagnostic things so every ultrasound was for diagnostics! Once you are pregnant how long do you stay with the re and when do you transfer to your ob (I know thats down the line but is helpful info)

I hope this helps! Like Maria said you will have many more questions throughout this process! Make sure your RE is open to questions and your input! I thionk it is important to feel comfortable with your RE! I LOVED mine! He was great and very straight forward... he did not pull any punches nor give me false expectations (I think this is very important at least to me!). You will probably leave and have more questions and that is normal!

Welcome to this journey and baby dust to you!

Thank you Maria and Robin. All those questions you mentioned are great. I wrote them all down and will bring the notepad with me. I am a talker by nature so I know that I will need to hold back a little and let the doctor talk. The RE will be through Oakwood Health Systems.
