"turkey baster" or IUI?

I am 36 and have decided that I am not going to wait for "Mr. Right" to come along. I have no idea if I have any fertility issues because I have never tired to get pregnant before. I spoke to a fertility Dr. and he did an internal sonogram and a bunch of blood work. I was debating on doing IUI or "turkey baster"(ICI I believe). The Fertility doc wants to do a battery of tests (6k or 7k worth) before he even starts talking IUI/IVF. I know a female couple that years ago orderd sperm from a bank(CA) it was delivered to them they did it themselves and it took the first time. It seems most of the sperm banks want a Physician to be involved. Has anyone done it on their own without a doctor? I thought i wouold try on my own a few times and then if that didn't work spend the money on the test and begin IUI or IVF depending on what the Fertility Dr recommends. I am just jumping into this pool and topic and loooking for advice.

Hi swtpotata,
Whenever I am at a low point in my 2ww I usually visit the Choice Moms web site and read a few stories to lift my spirits. I found an article that addressees your question "from a woman who can speak from experience";

I wish you all the best with your decision.
