Starting my IUI journey 35 and single!

Hey ladies! So excited to be here starting my journey with everyone. I am still finishing up the last of my test and hoping that my Dr will be ready to inseminate the beginning of next month! I believe I have narrowed down my choice to donor 4048. I will be starting with IUI I have no known issues so I am hoping for the first insemination to take, but I am definitely aware that its common for it not to take the first time. If anyone has any helpful tips for IUI success I am all ears! Best of luck to everyone!

I am at the same stage as you, no known issues, 33 and single. I just picked my donor (from another company) and will be inseminating at the end of the month. So exciting to be finally there! Best of luck

Hi Lizzie! Congratulations on your journey! Keep me posted on your success! Will your insemination be natural or is it medicated?
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
    Hi Danny!

My doctor and I agreed that we would do 2 cycles unmedicated and then if that doesn't work we would start meds. However, I just got the bill for the sperm so I am thinking that if one cycle doesn't work we will be medicating after the first cycle, lol.

How about you? meds or none?

I am single and 34. I have a 9yr old daughter and I’m waiting for my consultation later this month. I don’t believe I have any fertility issues, so I’m hoping to start off without any Meds.💖

    Welcome Marcie,

Have you picked a donor yet? Was your first child conceived using a donor?
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
    Hi Lizzieloo3,

My 1st child was conceived the old fashioned way with my ex-husband. I had my consultation with the doctor and he said my ovaries look great. I am getting my blood work done today, and hoping to do my 1st IUI in a couple weeks if everything comes back ok. I just purchased my donor sperm yesterday and I am sooo excited!

I am a little nervous about the HCG shot though. I like the idea that it helps prepare my uterine lining for implantation, but I am afraid it will increase the risk for a multiple pregnancy (which I do not want). Does anyone have any thoughts on the HGC shot?

    Thanks!

    Hi Marcie,

It's a good question. I want 2 children so twins would be a dream for me, 1 pregnancy and 2 kids in one shot? Heck ya! However if I have a singleton the first pregnancy I will definitely use a HCG shot on the second one as by then I will be at least 36 and I will have only two chances for a full sibling. My fertility clinic will only store 4 vials (2 vials per IUI) for $50 so that is what I will have. The company I chose will store vials but charges waaaay more than I can afford. It is important to me to have full siblings if I can and by then I am sure my donor will be sold out.

But what if I had twins the second time? For me it's this: If my only two choices were 1 child or 3 which would I chose? I would choose 3 kids hands down.

Marcie if you had the choice between having just your DD or adding two more which would you choose? I have read that there is up to a 30% chance of twins with fertility meds.

I had my IUI today!! I can't believe it has finally happened. I go again tomorrow morning for a second IUI and then I shall cross my fingers and toes for two weeks.

    Hi Lizzie,

You make some great points. Obviously I would figure things out if I were to get pregnant with twins. I just know a couple who just had twins and it nearly killed them the 1st few months. I think that would be very difficult for a single person. That being said, I believe things happen if they are meant to. However, I am not taking any fertility meds. I am getting mixed info about whether the HGC trigger shot increases the chances for multiple births or not. I think it probably does a little bit. I am going to discuss again with my doctor when I go on the 9th to review all my lab work. If all is well, then I am hoping to do two IUIs back to back the week after V-day.

I am so excited for you! Please keep me posted about how things are going with you in the next two weeks. How was the procedure? Were you super nervous? Sending sticky baby dust your way!

    Hi Danny,

Did you have your first IUI yet? Any luck? :)
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
The real fear is Triplets or more!!!! lol

I was very nervous going in the first time. And unfortunately for me that means a constant need to urinate. Both times I peed right before the procedure but I still felt like I was going to pee all over the nurse.

I found the first one quite painful as the speculum was too wide for my body. Once she took it out and used a narrower one I was fine. I laid there for 20 minutes after as I have read that studies have found that it increases your chance of pregnancy by 10%. The nurse told me I had a bit of spotting which was from irritation. But spotting turned to bleeding and I bleed quite a bit - about 5 hours. Mostly when I went pee. It was frightening but there wasn't anything I could do at that point. The nurse this morning said she wasn't sure why I bled so much but it could be my hormones not doing what they are meant to do. She didn't seem like she had any clue which is a little disappointing. She did tell me at the end of today's IUI that there was no blood on the speculum when she pulled it out. And it's been two hours since and I don't have any bleeding or spotting and that makes me feel a bit better.

I am hoping for the best!!
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
I think feeling like you have to pee before those procedures must be normal, because I feel exactly the same way! I wonder if your bleeding had anything to do with the large speculum the nurse used? I am going to a small local clinic and the doctor did my first internal ultrasound, pelvic exam, etc. himself, so I wonder if he does the IUI's himself too? None of that was painful, so I'm hoping for the best. My swimmers made it to the clinic safe and sound today, so I am pretty excited. I have never wanted my period to hurry up and get here so badly! LOL.

    Hi Lizzie,

So you did this 1st IUI totally natural with no trigger shot or anything, right? Did you use OPK tests to detect your LH surge? What was the timing of the IUI's compared to your surge? I'm still struggling with the timing a bit. There is so much conflicting info out there about how long frozen sperm survive, when most people ovulate after their surge, etc. So confusing.
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
My fertility team is pretty big so most of the procedures were done by different doctors or nurses. I have one doctor that is my go to though so I appreciate that consistency.

I did it unmedicated. I had tracked the previous 4 cycles in a variety of ways. The first 3 cycles I tracked BBT but stopped as I work shift work and it doesn't really work. But it did help me know when to expect my period. I also regularly check my cervical mucus and used the OPK kits in the am, and in the pm when it was close to my surge. I also made notes and I always get ovulation cramps - I got them last night at 530pm, whohoo!!!!

Based on my 4 cycles for 3/4 I would get the surge on day 20, and one cycle I got it on day 21. I knew it was likely going to surge on day 20-21 but oh my I found the week sooo stressful. My clinic does the IUI at 10am only, 1030am on weekends/stats. So when I get the surge in the am I go in and do it that morning, and again the following morning. The thing is my surge is often quite short and so if I missed the am surge and say got it at 11am, I would still have to wait until the next day. And then that cycle I would only do 1 IUI and have less chances of pregnancy.

My clinic would expect a call by 8am every morning to confirm pregnancy. The problem? You cant test your first am pee. You have to pee and then wait 2 hours to have a less diluted pee. For work I usually get up at 530am so on my days off, or when I worked evenings I would still have get up at 530am, pee and shower and then wait around to test the surge. I usually only waited 1 hour as I hadn't consumed any fluids for 8 hours or so. I didn't get the surge on day 20 (used 4 OPKs throughout the day lol) so I knew that Wed morning it would likely happen. I test it at 630am and had a very faint positive. Usually my positives are quite dark so I was a little worried. I test again at 7am and another positive and a bit darker, but not as dark as usual. I figured 720am would be dark but it was a negative?! and then I tested about 5 more times over the next 40 minutes and they were all negative. I was freaking out leaving messages for the nurse not knowing if I should come or not. (Donor sperm is so expensive it would be a costly mistake) She told me to plan to come in anyway and she would consult the doctor, who later told her it was time. My CM has confirmed it WAS the right time but holy, would it have been easy to miss that surge. I assume that it wasn't as dark as usual because in my first 4 cycles I wasn't tracking so early in the am. That is my theory.

People say that the 2ww is awful but I can't imagine anything being worse than the days leading up to this IUI. And I was so exhausted from getting up early for 10 days (I don't nap well) that the last 2 nights I got a pure 10 hours of sleep. I think I'm fine now lol.

My understanding is frozen sperm live for 24 hours. But when we ovulate after the surge seems to be the debate. All the sources I find say anywhere between 12-48 hours after the surge. It is very confusing! The way my clinic does it would mean I will have some live sperm in me to cover all of the potential ovulating time. Since I also get ovulation cramps I know I had swimmers in me last night.

I too was wondering about the speculum causing bleeding. I had some more blood this morning but I would describe it as spotting rather than bleeding. I am still hopeful!
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
I am super confused about my last cycle. I had what looked like positive OPK for a day and a half before it disappeared. 1st positive was 6pm cd13 (testing 2x/day). I got lazy about checking my cm, so I will do better with that this month. BBT on cd13 was 96.9, cd14 was 97.0, cd15 was 97.4, cd16 97.43, cd17 98.01. Based just on that, I think I probably ovulated on cd16. Based on past cycles ovulating on day 15-16 is pretty normal for me, but the positive OPK isn’t usually so early. I stopped taking the pill a few months ago, but I’m worried my cycle might still be adjusting itself. I’m afraid if I was doing the IUI last month, we might have done them too soon. I have a meeting with the doc to discuss lab work and figure out the plan for this month on the 9th. I think I’m leaning toward using the HCG shot and 2 IUIs, but I do need to find out their hours for procedures. I live like 5 minutes from the clinic, but work 30 mins away. Wishing you lots of luck!

Definitely chat to your doctor about when you are ovulating, I'm sure they can be insightful. I have found the CM and OKPs the most valuable. I went off the pill in August after 14 years and assumed my cycles would be wacky but they have been surprisingly consistent albeit long.

I'll keep you updated on my progress, I already feel pregnant lol
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
Hi Lizzie! I am crossing my fingers that you are pregnant! I remember the first sign I had with my daughter was waking up with acne one morning! I have never been so excited to have a bunch of zits! LOL! I also remember having sore breasts. Fingers crossed!
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
    Lizzie,

Are you going crazy waiting to find out? Any symptoms yet? :):):)
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
I am totally going crazy! Thursday-Saturday I was quite nauseous and there was some burning/cramps on my right side on Friday night and Sat morning. Similar to ovulation cramps. Slight nausea since then. But I think it would be very easy to feel symptoms that aren't real in my excitement. I am fighting the urge to take pregnancy tests this early because it likely hasn't implanted itself lol

How the heck will we go through this every month?!
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
I know how you feel. I should be starting my next cycle any day now and it's driving me crazy! Never been so eager for my period to hurry up and get here!

I do remember getting negative results on my pregnancy tests around day 10-11 with my 1st daughter. My husband at the time was going out of town for a week, so I tested early. Then I had to wait until like day 17 for him to be there when I tested again. Then it was finally positive. I also just talked to my sister who said she didn't get a positive pregnancy test until she was 6 weeks pregnant with her third kid. Apparently her levels were all low and the test couldn't detect the hcg. Just something else to obsess about. LOL!

Hey ladies!! I have not started treatment yet. My fertility doctor thought he saw a 6 centimeter fibroid and referred me back to my ob gyn who did a MRI and found that it was only 1 fibroid and less than a centimeter. They will be faxing the result to my fertility doctor so that I can get back on track. This process is so unpredictable and I just cannot wait to get inseminated!!
  • itsdannyitsdanny Junior Member Junior Member
Hi Lizzie! I actually am about to get back on the baby train I had to hold off for a little while because they thought I had a big fibroid that would have needed to be removed before insemination. But after the MRI turns out that's not the case, so ill update you as soon as I know more. But I honestly will do whatever gets me the fastest results as possible. I don't want to put this on hold any longer.

Hope everything is well with you!!

    Hi Danny,

Keep us posted. I did two back to back IUI's this month and I am now in my 2WW. :):):)
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
    Hi Danny,

I guess that's why all these tests are important, to fix an issues that might make conceiving difficult!

I did my first IUI Jan 31/Feb 1 and it was a BFN. I pushed my dr to do a medicated cycle this time so I am on Letrazole and have an u/s this Friday!

    Keep us posted!!
  • itsdannyitsdanny Junior Member Junior Member
How exciting Marcie!! Stay positive and keep us posted, best of luck :) I will definitely keep you guys posted! I finished all my testing and everything looks good. I am pre-diabetic so they are concerned about that. But I have completely switched my diet up so I am on top of that! Just waiting to get my next appt so we can talk about my insemination date.
  • itsdannyitsdanny Junior Member Junior Member
    Hey Lizzie,

Yes every step they take is so important and I am just trying to stay patient. Sorry about your BFN I hope the medication helps, keeping my fingers crossed for you! Im sure your BFP is right around the corner :)
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
I hope so Danny! I just did my IUI today, on to the TWW!!!!
  • Marcie35Marcie35 Member Member
    Hi Danny,

I had a BFN my first month, so I am also doing Letrozole and a Trigger Shot this month like Lizzy. I'm hoping that will be enough to get things going! I'm on day 4 of the Letrozole. I go in for my next scan on Monday and my IUI will be sometime next week. Keep us posted on your journey!
  • itsdannyitsdanny Junior Member Junior Member
Hey Ladies! Make sure you keep us posted! Good luck to you both!! My consultation is not until April 11th so hopefully I can get inseminated in May or June. I will you keep you updated! The donor that I want to use has 10 or less vials so I hope they do it sooner than later. Ughhh
  • lizzieloo3lizzieloo3 Member Member
I will cross my fingers for you that your preferred donor is still available!

I got pregnant with my second IUI :) Couldn't be happier if I tried!!!!!!!!!!
