Donor Sperm/ IUI

maria_cc79maria_cc79 Junior Member Junior Member
Hello,

I am going to be doing IUI with donor sperm in the near future. My husband and I chose this route after he had 2 failed vasectomy reversals. We hope to conceive this winter with a donor from CLI. I would love to connect and share my journey with others that are going through a similar situation.

You sound like me. My husband has had 2 vasectomy reversals and nothing. So now our other options would be IVF w/ICSI or IUI with donor sperm. We have decided to go with IUI with donor sperm. It's cheaper and we have already paid out of pocket for both surguries so we are hoping this works. I would love to hear more stories. It's been overwhelming to me looking over profiles and trying to pick the best match. How does what do it? I also want to make sure we choose a good donor since this is our last resort.

    Best Wishes to all!

    Hi Jill,

I agree that picking a donor can be overwhelming. My husband and I had an anonymous donor picked out from another bank that matched him and his family background extremely well but after some discussion this summer we decided to look for an ID options/release/consent donor instead. We found one that we really like here at Cryolab. He doesn't match DH as well as the anonymous donor but we liked his audio interview and family health history and we got to see a childhood photo which is neat. So, I called them to ask if there were pregnancies reported for this donor and there are. I also ended up finding a Yahoo Group that is made up of other women who have conceived or are trying to conceive with the same donor. Knowing that other women have conceived with this donor makes us feel better about using him. However, currently there is a waitlist for the donor we want to use so we put our name on the list and have to wait to cycle. I hope to cycle by Dec. or Jan. but I have no clue how long it will take for them to call me back. I plan to have an HSG done before we start the IUIs. Anyways, with picking a donor, we just wanted to make sure that we picked a donor that has been proven. I hope you are able to find a donor that you like and that you will have quick success. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to help answer them if I can. Please keep us posted on your journey!

P.S. Anyone else want to join our discussion? I would love to hear from you?
  • Hi ladies, same situation here. Went through one VR that was successful for about a year till the numbers went waaay down. Tried IVF w/ICSI because we had some insurance coverage, but the two embabies didn't make it. :( Which brought us to cryogenic. My lovely little boy was born the end of May and he is the joy of our life!! I'm so glad we went the donor route and didn't continue to have expensive procedures. Oh we did 4 cycles of IUI before I was pregnant with RMIA in Woodbury. Two natural, one clomid, and one follistim.
  • Hello, everyone. While we are in a slightly different boat (husband has maturation arrest as opposed to vasectomy), the end result was the same. Currently we are trying to conceive using the same donor we did when we conceived my daughter. Back then, we, too, had picked out a donor who matched my husband’s features and ethnic background at another bank, but decided on an identity release donor through Cryolab. The donor had very little physically in common with my husband (only eye color), but their personalities and sense of humor were similar. It was just more important to us to pick a donor who was open to contact with our daughter, should she choose to contact him, than it was that she look just like her daddy. We wanted to give her that option. Also, the donor we picked didn’t have any reported pregnancies at the time, but he was fairly new, so we took a chance and it worked on the first cycle! I don’t expect it to be that quick this time, as I am older, but I’m hoping it will happen within the next couple months.

My best advice is to make a list of important physical features that you and your husband /partner absolutely want (husband and I both have blue eyes, so we wanted a blue eyed donor) or any other features you deem important (CMV status, Identity release, pregnancy reported, etc), then go from there. This is how we started. Once we had our some-what shortened list, we went through and read each summary profile and staff impressions. This helped shorten the list even further. At this point, we only had about four donors left. We then listened to the full audio interviews. The interview is what helped us make up our minds (I guess it also helped that the donor was a cute baby! :) ).
Well, I wish everyone good luck!
  • I am in the same boat and pretty nervous scared about the whole process. It seems like even when you do tons of research there are still so many unanswered questions. My husband had a vasectomy after 10 years of marriage & 3 children from his previous wife. I have no children and am approaching the higher risk age so we decided we need to get going. We have picked a potential donor but haven't ordered yet. We first are trying to figure out exactly what our story to others is going to be. :?: Any advice is appreciated in any aspect.
  • My husband and I are using donor sperm as well due to my husband's low sperm count and motility. We are very excited but yet nervous. I am just wondering if someone could give me any insight on how many cycles they had to go through till pregnancy was acheived. We did our first round last month and it did not work. Looks like we will be doing insemination again this week. I know that everybody is different etc... Just want to see what the experiences have been with others.

    Thanks....

Well, we finally got a call back from CLI offering us some vials of our selected ID consent/release donor. We were able to get 8 vials. I am really happy because that means we get 2 years free storage! I plan to buy at least 4 more vials once we acheive pregnancy through this donor. I want to make sure I have enough for a sibling in the future too. I'm now just waiting for my Aunt Flow to come visit me and then I will start an IUI cycle.....Yay! I have an appointment on Thurs. with my Dr. to discuss meds/trigger shot etc. I'm so excited to get the show on the road. However, I'm not looking forward to the 2 week wait....lol. Is anyone else starting up soon?

    :0) Maria
  • We just had our insemination this past Friday. Now the waiting........That is the worst!!!!! I guess I am getting used to waiting as we have been on the adoption waiting list for over 3 years so 2 weeks is really not bad. Good luck to you!

Jen: Good luck with your 2ww! I hope you get a BFP at the end of this one! Please keep me posted.

Jill: How is your process going? Have you been able to find a donor that you like? Please keep me updated. I hope you have quick success!

Becca: How are you doing? DId you pick a donor yet? Just wondering where you are at with all of this. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing.

firstandformostmom: Thanks for sharing your story and process with us! Congrats on your daughter! We also thought that picking an ID release donor was more important than having the donor match all of my husband's features. I just hope that the donor we picked gets us pregnant. Have you been able to conceive #2 yet? I hope you get your 2nd little miracle soon! Please keep me posted.

nnegaard: Thanks for sharing your success story! Congrats on your little boy! I am so happy that you got your little miracle! Keep in touch with us!

As for me: I'm still waiting for my Aunt Flow to come visit me but she should be here by next week. Then I will be doing 5mgs of Femara and having an IUI 24hrs after a +OPK. Does this sound like good timing to you all? For those of you who have been through this, what was your protocol for IUI? Just curious because I worry about timing because I've been told that thawed sperm doesn't live as long as fresh sperm. Any thoughts anyone?

    :) Maria

P.S. Does anyone else want to join our discussion? Anyone else that has gone through this process or going through it currently?

Hello, ladies! I'm glad to see so many others talking here! I'm in my 20's and my husband just turned 40, but had a vasectomy about 13 years ago. We discussed an RV, but it was just too expensive for the fairly low chance of success. (He was a good candidate, though.) IVF was WAY WAY WAY too expensive, so we're hoping an IUI will be perfect for us. It will cost us about $1,000 an attempt, though, so we're really hoping for a quick conception. Does anyone have any stories about their experiences with how many "attempts" their IUI conceptions take? (Especially if you are younger, like myself.) I'm an otherwise healthy young woman, just lacking a fertile husband. :) I have a few donors in mind already from this lab, my husband seems a little less interested, of course. I plan on making up our own little survey for him to fill out and use to compare all our favorites here. (Our other choice of a sperm bank is California CryoLab but they are nearly $200 more per specimen, and you have to pay $145.00 to view childhood photos. I hate to sound cheap as you really can't be once you're a parent, but what's the point of depleting our savings at this point in life!)

    Good luck to you all!

I am in a different boat. We are a same sex couple. My partnert got lucky on the first try and she was 33 at the time. I am in the process now and hope for the same luck, I am 26 so should have decent chances.

That said, price wise, unless your insurance covers part of it you might want to figure way higher! Of coarse it also depends on what clinic you are going to. I would recommend Diamonds Women Center in Edina.

Some insurance covers nothing, others cover part, and yet other cover all but the sperm. My insurance covers everthing but the insemination, any medication and the sperm. So with that figured in, my total for just those 3 things is around $800 a try. Depending on the process you used, if its medicated and monitored or if you just track yourself will determine cost. My is fully watched, medicated and triggered at the right time. So in my case there is a min of 2 ultrasounds, extensive blood work, and fertility drugs. If you need a cost estimate I can tell you part of it.

    Heya, Blue!

Well, I'm still figuring about $1,000 an attempt, which includes any miscellaneous medical costs. I am a member of Kaiser Permanente in Denver, Colorado, so unfortunately I don't think I could visit your clinc. :) I'm sure they are awesome though! My insurance does not cover any of the actual fertility related appointments, but ultrasounds and bloodwork, x-rays, prescriptions, etc etc, are all covered. The quote I gave myself of about one thousand includes the cost of a "specimen" (Say, $395) plus the cost of the insemination process itself, as taken from my doctor's provided cost list. (About $450 for the clinic visit, plus $25 for the Clomid each time.) We have enough saved for 3 attempts + shipping and storage for the 3 specimens at once, and cushion. Because of my good health and young age I am really hoping it takes on the second try!

    Thanks for the words!

Well, I had my first IUI with donor 2938 on December 15th and it worked! I got my beautiful two pink lines on Wednesday :D. I really didn't expect the first one to work. My husband and I are both still in shock but we are so happy! Now I just pray that my little bean continues to grow and thrive. I just wanted to share my happy news with you all. How is everyone else doing? Any updates on anyone else? Where is everyone at now in their cycles?
  • bluesky10bluesky10 Senior Member Senior Member
I hoped being young and healthy(26 never been on BC or anything) that I would get lucky as well. Well the first attempt didnt work, now I have to wait until Feb as the Clomid gave me cysts. So not only did it not take I have to sit out a cycle. I only have one vial of sperm left from the same donor as my daughter, and he is no longer avalable. I really wanted to have a half sibling to her, however I dont feel its going to happen.
  • clarapippaclarapippa Junior Member
maria: Congratulations! Rub off some of that luck on me!

Blue: Sometimes you can talk with the lab and see if they can contact the donor personally and request more samples just for you. I read about that SOMEwhere on the website, not extirely sure where. Good luck with your next attempt though!

An update on myself: I had a very promising, clean HSG (?) about two weeks ago... You know, the awkward x-ray. Now it's just a waiting game... Apparently when I get my next mens. I go in for an ultrasound, if that looks good then they put me on Clomid and I get my first attempt! It's getting close to the line now, if everything comes on time. My husband still hasn't chosen his favorite donor! And of course of our top choices is on "special" this month, so I hope there's still a few vials left for me when we get around to purchasing. My doctor will only hold 4 vials at a time anyway, and that was how many I was planning on purchasing, so I hope it takes within said 4!

You might want to keep them at the lab, that way if you dont need them all you can sell them back.

Its very very expensive to get a donor to donate again. I do have another picked out just incase this next one dont take. If I dont take after 3 I am not trying anymore anyway.
  • clarapippaclarapippa Junior Member
Unfortunately if I were to keep my vials at Cryolab, I would have to shell out a bunch for shipping each month and it's simply not economical for my husband and I. The shipping rate is about $170.00 due to the sensitivity of the tissue, so I'd rather pay that once and store them at my doctor's office (it's Kaiser, and a new facility at that; probably has a great storage area!) than have to pay $170.00 each month. It's all so expensive! It kind of makes me resentful toward the people with multiple "unwanted" children due to a lack of responsibility! I don't think some people realize what those of us with fertility issues go through just to have the joy that they consider a burden. :|

It costs me 170 a crack to ship as well. My doc no longer has a storage area so I have to go with this route. I have thought about just picking it up on my way tho to save the money.
  • My husband and I are selecting a donor for IUI sometime this year. We've done pretty much everything shy of IVF - HSG, laparascopy, meds, multiple semen analyses, 4 IUIs...no luck after 8 years trying. I am up for IVF; he is not. It He has very serious issues with count, motility and morphology and the longer we've tried the worse the results have become. I have two reproductive disorders I manage with meds but IVF would be a gamble for us in every way possible. My insurance is pretty amazing in comparison to many but they only allow one IVF or 6 IUIs. We've agreed to save the last one for IVF should we ever reconsider that procedure in the future.

As far as selecting a donor I think we're fairly atypical. We've never tried to find one who looks just like either of us. We will be disclosing the use of the donor to our child as well as close family and friends. But since there are thousands of donors to choose from we narrowed the selection down by using my husband's two most noticeable traits - hair color and height. It just seems to make selection easier. We also discussed CMV, family health, blood type and other medical issues with our RE and the three of us agree it's mostly insignificant. We didn't pick one another as partners or decide to have children based on our blood type or what illnesses our mothers had. As scientific as all the ART we've gone through and will go through we are trying to remain as natural about the donor process as possible. Going to lengths to find the perfect donor felt too much like trying to get a warranty on a used car! What's important to us is just having a child and we will later deal with what may come as any parent would. There are never any guarantees with any way you decide to build a family.

We definitely like Cryogenics. We've not ordered yet but this company has the best methods of selection available to customers. It baffles me how other labs want to charge you for viewing information about the donors before you buy. It's almost insulting! Can you imagine being charged by Target to shop in their store to see if there's anything there you actually want to purchase? It's ridiculous! Cryogenics offers information other labs are charging in excess of $145 for. I'm not trying to be cheap about the situation but when you add these fees plus the vials and storage and the actual inseminations, one cycle can be right expensive. We've picked a donor that just popped out to us and seems "right". Being able to view his baby photo was an added bonus! We just feel some connection seeing that photo and it feels more real to us, that we might actually be parents afterall. We're still trying to decide to do the IUI right away or later this summer but I'm definitely getting excited about the prospect of becoming pregnant. It's something I never thought would be possible for us.
  • Hello! I so happy to have discovered the Family Forums here. After trying on our own for 3+ years with no success, we discovered that my DH has azoospermia due to Klinefelter's Syndrome. Spending $20k+ for IVF w/TESE and ICSI did not seem realistic, given our not-great chances. We originally opted to go the adoption route, but after 7+ months with a frustrating adoption agency, someone suggested that we consider using a donor to start our family. We hadn't really ever thought about this option before - it's not a widely discussed topic - so we started looking into it, and eventually decided it was for us!

Our RE ran full diagnostics on me (HSG, FSH, bloodwork, ultrasounds, you name it) and everything looks perfect. I am relatively young (but turning the dreaded 3-0 in April). At this point we have gone through 5 unmedicated cycles without success (all with the same donor - we bought 6 vials up front). Our RE is having us come in next week (2/1/11) for a consultation - I'm sure she's ready to discuss some fertility meds, which have us a bit nervous since everything 'seems' to be working fine already. We certainly don't want to keep wasting our resources, but personally I'd rather try a few more natural cycles with a new donor before switching to meds.

It's nice to know other ladies that are going through the same process right now.

    Thanks,

    Rebecca from FL
  • My husband also had a vasectomy and our doctor did not recommend a reversal. He said that it was not likely to work and then we would be out the money. We considered ICSI, but my husband didn't really want to go through that either. He suggested using a donor and the more we talked about it the more it felt like a good option for us. We looked at 4 different banks, but we ended up here. We have done 2 IUI cycles. The first one with Clomid and trigger ended up not working. We did our 2nd IUI in February using Clomid, Follistim, and trigger and on Thursday I got a positive beta! We are so thrilled. I love my husband so much and I am so happy that there are options available to couples like us to have children too. I am looking forward to everything that will be happening for us in the next few months. Best of luck to everyone else.

    Hi Jill,

I also ended up finding a Yahoo Group that is made up of other women who have conceived or are trying to conceive with the same donor.

where is the yahoo group? is it just for the donor you are using or are there other donors on there too? are they all from cryolab?

    thanks

Kristy, the yahoo group that I found is just for women using the same donor (2938) but I know there are other groups for other donors. You can do a search on Yahoo Groups to see if your donor has a group started or you can google your donor # to see if there are other groups/posts on other sites discussing your donor. Good Luck!

  • My husband and I are new to DI. After meeting with our fertility clinic we have completed all the testing - HSG, sonograms, bloodwork, etc and passed the testing. We were given 3 options - RV with a 35% chance of success, IVF - very expensive, meds, etc..., and DI. It took us a year to really decide which method was best for us. We flipped between the RV and the DI. Finally deciding on DI. Family of course knows he had a vacsectomy 10 yrs ago. They all would be really excited with us having a child and have started asking for one. So I dont see keeping how we conceived a secret from our loved ones. My clock is ticking since I will be turning 38 this year. Its wonderful to be able to read stories of others like us. It seems overwhelming to "go shopping" as I call it. How picky do you get with choosing the donors? etc... My husband isnt into the shopping to much..but rather he would like to look at 3 or 4 of my favorites and us make the final decision together. I read some comments on here that stuck out to me. Pick a couple of important traits to us and go from there. A precious little baby is a baby as well as part of our family. Before I can order vials, we have to complete a therapy session regarding those difficult questions we will encounter later in life. I keep telling myself every mother is nervous at some point. Mine just will be before conception instead of during the preganancy. We only see having one child, but know that this has been said by many and later wished for a second. So how many vials do you purchase the first time? Do you go back and purchase more vials later for the second child and keep them at CLI so that if you later wish to sell them back you can? At our clinic, they require you to pay for storage with them (1 year) so they can have the samples at the clinic and ready when we need them, cutting out the stress of the vials making to the clinic in time. For ones that have been through a session or too..Once you pick your donor and you purchase the vials, they are in storage and your ready to start the DI process, (Im nervous about it) can anyone tell me what the next steps are? I havent heard medications mentioned in our doctor appts and believe we will try without them. Looking for advice on picking the donor, and the next steps of the DI after purchase of the vials.

    Hi mlm,

I want to wish you the best of luck in conceiving a baby very soon! My husband had 2 vasectomy reversal surgeries but neither worked so we decided to move on to IUI with donor sperm. We both wanted to use an ID options/consent donor so we wanted to use a bank that offered that option. We loved that CLI offered free online profiles, childhood photos, and audio interviews. We found a donor we both really liked here at Cryolab so we decided to buy 8 vials to start because CLI offers 2 years free storage when you purchase 8 vials or more. Getting those 8 vials all at once was kind of hard since he had a wait list all the time but we were able to do it because someone else on his wait list decided not to purchase the vials offered to them. I ended up getting pregnant after the first IUI with our donor. We were so shocked! I'm now 27 weeks pregnant with a baby girl and we are so excited to meet her! Anyways, we plan to have 2, maybe 3 children using the same donor so we are on the wait list again to buy a few more vials to put into storage just to be safe. I hope you and your husband are able to agree on a donor soon and have quick success! Please keep us posted on your progress and keep us posted on when you start your IUI cycle! It's nice to have others to connect with and cheer on during this process.

  • Hi ladies! I know there hasn't been any posts in a while but hoping I can join in and we can all continue chatting. My Dh and I found out 2 years ago that he has azoosppermia so it took a while for my Dh to come to terms with it and after much searching found our PERFECT donor here at CLI his baby photo matches my husbands almost perfectly and they are even in the same career and have blue eyes and full lips. We knew we had found our donor the second he saw his picture. we are currently on our third cycle after two failed attempts I'm currently on 100mg of clomid and should be triggering and having my IUI next week. I'm really hoping the added trigger will make this third time a charm. My beta day also happens to fall on my Dh's birthday, wouldn't that be a wonderful birthday present! Where is everyone in their cycles? Hope everyone is doing well.lots of baby dust!
